City of Loveland, CO is Hiring a Groundworker (Temporary) Near Loveland, CO

Our Groundworker provides ground support functions for the line and substation crews in the operation of tools and materials, equipment inspection, and repair on mechanical infrastructure, construction, and maintenance within the overhead and underground distribution system.

This is a temporary position, working 40 hours per week, for a maximum of 10 months. There is an option for medical coverage only.

The pay rate for this position is $26.90 per hour.

We will hire 2 Groundworkers, and this opportunity will be available until April 19, 2024 at 3:00pm MST.

The Power Division is seeking a collaborative, team-orientated, safe-minded, self-motivated groundworker to join our team. This individual will be responsible for performing maintenance and occasionally helping line crews on an 80% underground and 20% overhead high-voltage distribution system. Our candidate will work within a team of three groundworkers, crew supervisors, and a progressive and supportive management team.

This individual will be focused on system maintenance and small power installation jobs. They will need to follow a system map and keep detailed records of maintenance needed and performed. Our City is growing and expanding operations throughout Loveland. Since 1925, the City of Loveland has provided residents with affordable, reliable electric service and today, the Electric Division provides service to more than 38,000 residences and more than 4200 commercial accounts, within a 74 square mile territory, maintains 8 substations, 18 substation transformers, 4 city-owned public EV charging stations, and a 3.5 MW DC solar generating facility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs installation of handholes, pedestals and secondary wires for new and up-grade electrical services.
  • Inspects non-mechanical equipment and maintains vegetation control and debris around residential underground equipment
  • Delivers tools and materials to job sites and keeps tools and equipment clean, be called on to assist overhead or underground crews.
  • Stocks and cleans vehicles, performs inspection and repair on mechanical infrastructure; keeps tools and equipment in good working order and helps maintain equipment used in the electrical field
  • Equipment painting, graffiti removal, mowing and weed control at substations
  • Hauls poles, digs holes, and assists in framing and the setting of power/utility poles as instructed
  • Performs various labor activities, including running equipment, installing wire, digging trenches
  • Support line crews with hand excavation to locate defective underground primary and secondary electrical cables

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with coworkers and the general public.
  • Willingness to learn underground installation practices, and basic electrical safety procedures.
  • Ability to communicate and receive verbal instructions from long distances.
  • Knowledge of distribution mapping symbols and procedures
  • Able to maintain vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from heights.
  • Ability to judge distance and dexterity to use tools and equipment.
  • Physical stamina to withstand work during severe weather conditions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures and practices and emergency protocols.
  • Ability to demonstrate independent judgment, decision making and communicate decisions to subordinates and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate basic computer equipment and word/informational processing software
  • Ability to use text, email, cell phones, radios and other means of communication.
  • Ability to do basic math.
  • Ability to to reach the Service Center (located at 200 Wilson Ave) within 30 minutes is preferred.

Education and/or experience:  

  • A High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Six months experience with an electrical distribution utility or a certificate from an approved electrical lineworker training program is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office is preferred.

Licensure and/or certifications: Must possess a valid driver’s license.  A CDL is preferred.

Working conditions and physical requirements:

  • Work is generally performed outside in all types of weather and temperatures with excessive noise from machines, jackhammers, chain saws, etc. and may involve climbing, walking and working from ladders at various heights or on uneven or slippery surfaces, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping and kneeling on a frequent basis. 
  • Work may involve working in confined spaces. 
  • Moderate physical activity required by moving, positioning and maneuvering objects up to 50 pounds or suspending 50 pounds from a line for a period of time typically not to exceed five minutes occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently. 
  • Sufficient eyesight to judge distances and manual dexterity to operate various tools. 
  • Ability to communicate and receive verbal instructions at distances of up to 75 feet. 
  • Physical endurance to perform duties throughout a standard 8-hour workday. 
  • Work may involve long hours and overtime during evening, holidays, and weekends. 
  • Subject to call-back work, and must be capable of responding to an emergency situation upon short notice. 
  • May be required to carry a cell phone at designated times.
