Job Description

Position Information: This position provides support to the Technical Services Librarian to provide collection management services for the Longview Public Library. This includes copy cataloging, processing, and repair of print materials, check-in and processing of serials, item record maintenance. This position will also provide support to the Circulation Specialist by locating and preparing patron requests, as well as customer service at the circulation desks. This position assists in the efforts to make the library a diverse, equitable and inclusive place in the community.

**The finalist will be subject to a pre-employment background check. This position is represented by the EBA and the contract can be found on the City's website, www.mylongview.com.

Essential Job Duties

Desk duties

  • Serve the public by performing circulation tasks at the drive-thru, juvenile desk and main desk.
  • Able to inform patrons about programs and services offered within the library.
  • Assist patrons in utilizing library resources including our online catalog, print and digital collections, online databases, and library events and programs.
  • Answer informational and reference questions in-person and over the phone.
  • Assist patrons with using computers, copiers, printers, microfilm and other equipment within the library.
  • Take and process payments for library fees of lost or overdue materials and other purchases.
  • Understands Library policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
Circulation Support
  • Perform opening and closing of library areas including the juvenile desk, the main desk and meeting rooms.
  • Provides backup for processing pull list.
Reference and Administrative support
  • Assist and respond to patron requests regarding obituaries and TDN articles both on the phone and in person.
  • Provide support for Longview Room.
Technical Services Support
  • Copy cataloging of print materials in designated collections.
  • Check-in and processing of print magazines.
  • Assist with ILS database maintenance such as authority control, empty bibliographic records, and other cleanup and correction.
Meetings and projects
  • Participate as an active member of the technical services team at the library by attending designated meetings and bringing ideas to the group.
  • May serve as a library representative on city-wide committees like Wellness, Employee Recognition, or Safety.
  • Can participate in professional organizations and professional development opportunities if they arise or are assigned.
Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned by the department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent AND 1-2 years of related experience in a Library, customer service, filing, or accounting OR a combination of education, training and experience which would provide the required skills, knowledge and ability to perform the job as determined by the department.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

  • Ability to process library materials accurately and in a timely manner; can file materials and records accurately and efficiently.
  • The ability to handle job stress and interact effectively with others in the workplace.
