Temporary part-time position expected to last through August 31, 2024.
 
The City of Littleton is seeking a Temporary Part-Time Historic Site Interpreter to educate visitors at the Littleton Museum. The Historic Site Interpreter helps educate and enlighten visitors about the history of Littleton, the Platte River Valley, Colorado, and the West with an emphasis on the period of the late 1850's - 1910 through research, demonstrations, and various interpretive techniques. Recreates daily life activities, special events, or happenings using the museum's and historic sites' resources of buildings, livestock, land area, and historic artifacts and objects. Participates and assists in planning for several major events throughout the year. 
 
The ideal candidate is passionate about history, the interpretation of Colorado in the 19th century, and sharing knowledge to educate others through various programs and exhibits. The ideal candidate enjoys working with the public and has experience planning and delivering educational programs and special events.

Starting pay range $25.95 - $28.69 per hour
 
Work Schedule:  This position will be expected to work 25 hours per week and may require some evening and weekend hours. 

Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted until finalists are identified or the position is filled, but preference will be given to complete applications received by April 27, 2024. Those who do not apply by this date may or may not be considered.
  • Educates museum visitors through accurate characterization and interpretation of events and activities of the past. This interaction includes continual conversation (interpretation) with visitors while recreating events and performing activities of the farm era of the 1850's through 1910. 
  • Conducts research and gathers information from primary and secondary sources, as required, to perform interpretive activities.
  • Develops and presents programs for museum visitors.
  • Operates equipment and uses tools of the 1850's-1910 to perform physically demanding work in the household, garden, farm, field, and blacksmith shop while wearing historically accurate dress. 
  • Handles, controls, and uses large and small livestock for educational purposes.
  • Assists and cares for the museum livestock by supplying food and water as instructed.
  • May be responsible for grounds maintenance such as snow removal, trimming trees and bushes, and caring for lawn areas.
  • May occasionally be required to supervise museum volunteers.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.
  • Performs other similar duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • One (1) year previous training or work experience in teaching or working in a public setting for educational and special recreational needs, handwork, trade, or craft work of the late nineteenth or early twentieth century; or 
  • An equivalent combination of formal education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check and motor vehicle records check.
 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
 
  • Experience planning and delivering educational programs and special events
  • Experience with 19th century historical interpretation 
  • Requires advanced knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of teaching and/or interpretation.
  • Solid knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of public speaking and public presentations. 
  • Basic knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of animal husbandry, gardening, farm trades and crafts.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal, customer service, and verbal communication skills; the ability to effectively communicate and interact with customers of diverse backgrounds. 
  • The skill and ability to perform work safely in close proximity to museum visitors and livestock.
 
 
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • This position includes physical activities that range from moderate to strenuous. Long periods of sitting, standing or walking may be required. Physical activities include: lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. 
  • Some of this work is performed indoors in a standard office environment, museum exhibit galleries, or classrooms. The majority of this work is performed outdoors on the museum grounds, farmyards and in historic buildings. 
  • May be exposed to natural elements and odors produced by livestock and extreme heat or cold, with or without temperature changes.
