Chief of Police
After a decade of leading Leesburg’s accredited Police Department, and almost 30 years with the department, the current chief has moved into a different leadership role within our organization. For this reason, the City of Leesburg is now seeking a new dynamic and experienced individual to fill the position of Chief of Police.
Leesburg is situated in a rapidly growing area of central Florida, near The Villages and approximately 45 minutes from Orlando. The department has an annual budget of $12.6 million with over 100 civilian and sworn employees, and will continue to expand in response to the needs of our community. Leesburg serves over 28,000 residents and is also a central hub for commerce, attracting 50,000 people to work each weekday. The Chief of Police will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the department, including law enforcement, public safety, and community relations, in accordance with the authority delegated by the City Manager.
Candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field; supplemented by ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible experience in a police department, preferably in a comparatively sized police agency in a diverse ethnic community, in addition to the minimum training and qualifications established by Florida Statutes, including at least eight (8) years of supervisory or management experience. Completion of executive law enforcement training program such as the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers Course, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy, or equivalent program. Labor/management experience and a master’s degree in public or business administration or a related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of related education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Requires Police Officer Certification for State of Florida; and Special skills or equipment certification may be required. Must live within a 20-mile radius of the Leesburg city limits within six months of employment.
Salary: $100,006.40 - $200,012.80
