City of Las Cruces is Hiring a Museum Curator II (Education) Near Las Cruces, NM

Under limited direction, the Museum Curator II (Education) grows, strengthens, and fortifies K-12 educational programming at the museums by better aligning LCMS programming to LCPS K-12 learning goals and the curriculum map. Creates and develops outreach programs, learning opportunities, pre and post visit curriculum, and thematic programming for education and enrichment goals.

Work Situation Factors:

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, managing personnel, and responding to customer issues.

Physical Factors:

Light physical demands; mostly desk work requiring the ability to lift and carry files and reports and frequent use of a personal computer. Must be able to walk for a moderate period of time.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed indoors in a museum setting.

Full-time, regular, exempt position.

This position is graded at RX17. 
  • Develops, creates, curates, and implements strong grade appropriate educational curriculum to serve the K-12 population within the City; creates long term and travelling exhibitions, pre and post visit activities, tours, and outreach programs to deliver excellent educational opportunities for the City.
  • Establishes and develops frameworks for educational programming, processes, proposals, evaluation, and staffing; works with other partners to align programming across LCMS; understands thematic programming needs, forecasting with internal and external partners, and increasing collaboration and communication.
  • Evaluates and reviews programs for effectiveness and success; recommends new programs or updates to existing programs; tracks services provided to the community and monitors results of projects and specialized programs; generates, prepares, and presents operational reports and program successes.
  • Trains, educates, and supports staff performing tours and educational programming; facilitates teacher training and planning, workshops, and educational conferences to enrich the educational programs.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and monitors various marketing and promotional efforts; makes public presentations regarding museum activities and programming.
  • Collaborates, communicates, and works closely with staff to align programming with published K-12 standards and benchmarks; understands and implements standards for art, history, culture, and science to enhance the educational experience; engages common core and NGSS as appropriate.
  • Develops, establishes, and builds networks with K-12 public, private, and charter schools, homeschool groups, and other educational groups to ensure curriculum supports educational goals.
  • Provides excellent and efficient customer service to visitors; answers and responds to inquiries from the public; prepares and drafts correspondence and reports.
  • Analyzes and evaluates impact of educational programming which reflects in relevant performance measures; works with other personnel to align budget, resources, and ensure programming meets expectations.
  • Serves as a liaison with Las Cruces Community Schools and other educational groups through the city and represents the City in informal and formal settings.
Bachelor's degree in Education, Humanities, Liberal Arts, Science, Museum Studies, or a related field PLUS three (3) years of experience curating, developing, and creating educational programming. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Licenses/Certifications:
Valid driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.

Knowledge of:Principles and practices of educational programming and curation; curriculum and resource development;K-12 curriculum standards and benchmarks;principles and practices of public relationsmarketing, and communications; business and personal computers; City policies and procedures. 

Ability to:Manage, prioritize, and complete complex assignments; create, develop, and establish effective educational programming;provide recommendations on educational programming and projects;communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing;establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and representatives from other local, state, and Federal agencies.

Skills inDeveloping and managing educational programs; developing recommendations for improvements of museum programs and facilities, conducting public presentations; presenting information regarding museum missions and operations to patrons of the museum; using specials tools, materials, and equipment specific to museums.
