Job Summary:
Responsible, semi-skilled position coordinating the operational aspects of the motor vehicle fleet for the Largo Police Department. Work is performed with some independence under the supervision of the Civilian Services Coordinator
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical
  • Serves as the Police Department's liaison with Fleet Management to ensure timely maintenance is performed on vehicles
  • Coordinates scheduling of vehicles with individuals for the routine maintenance, inspection, and repair of assigned vehicles
  • Communicates and provides information to others via two-way radio, cell phone, email, and written reports
  • Operates a trailer hitch and safely operates a vehicle with a trailer attached
  • Performs automotive maintenance such as jump-starting cars
  • Maintains master vehicle key box and makes duplicates as needed
  • Washes vehicles on an as-needed basis

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) and a background demonstrating skill in customer service and mechanical aptitude or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • One year experience in semi-skilled maintenance work and experience with light automotive equipment preferred
  • Valid Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Requires being reliable, responsible, dependable, and the ability to fulfill obligations
  • Knowledge of basic automotive maintenance processes
  • Skilled and knowledgeable in basic computer applications
  • Mechanical aptitude required
  • Ability to communicate and build effective working relationships with a diverse group of people
  • Physical strength and agility to perform minimal manual labor
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment: 80% outside, which includes driving; 20% work inside a climate-controlled building.
Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require sitting approximately two (2) hours per day and walking and standing approximately five (5) hours per day. The work requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, and minimal lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to hear emergency vehicles and cars and normal conversation in person and on the telephone. Speaking: Ability to communicate vehicle maintenance instructions to Fleet and Police employees. Seeing: Driving skills - Ability to see oncoming traffic, the color of traffic lights, and pedestrian signals. Depth perception is important.
Driving Requirements: Requires frequent driving and possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
Technology: The work requires the ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and laptop computers, calculators, and all associated software.
Tools: The work requires proficiency with portable and mobile radios, heavy flashlights, locks, keys, battery chargers and cables, and basic hand tools.

Yes - FDLE AND CJSTC SECURITY CLEARANCE: As mandated by the FDLE, CJSTC, and the Largo Police Department, this position may be subject to additional security clearances due to access to the police department facility or police department's electronic data.
Elements of Selection Process:
1. Review of applications for selection of individuals to be interviewed.
2. Schedule those applicants selected to be interviewed.
3. Selected applicants will interview with panel.
4. Conduct criminal background check and driving history record on top applicant.
5. Schedule physical for top applicant.
6. Verification of three (3) personal references.
7. Schedule applicant to report to on-boarding session held in Human Resources on the first day of work.
Duration of The Process:
The expected duration of the selection process for filling the position should take approximately three (3) to four (4) weeks.
