The Public Service Department is seeking skilled and versatile Seasonal Maintenance Workers to perform a variety of tasks within the Operations and Maintenance Division positions include: Grounds, Forestry, Landscape, Cemetery, Streets, Surface, Sewer, and Solid Waste. This is an excellent employment opportunity for anyone who enjoys working outdoors and utilizing various tools and equipment to complete a wide variety of labor tasks.

Employees work up to 40 hours/ week from April to October with possible recall option to return year after year

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in the maintenance of municipal properties by performing a wide range of manual laboring tasks in buildings, parks, cemeteries and athletic fields.
  • Assisting in the repair of public walks, alleys, and gutters by carrying concrete, sand, and other supplies, mixing materials by hand and mechanically, and visually inspecting work to ensure it meets established quality standards.
  • Lifting and hauling equipment, tools, and supplies weighing from fifty (50) to ninety-five (95) pounds.
  • Picking up refuse, litter, and debris by hand, bending over as needed, and in certain cases, using rakes, vacuuming devices and power blowers.
  • May operate air hammers, air compressors, and jack hammers.
  • May perform building custodial tasks including: manually scrubbing walls, windows and other surfaces; sweeping and mopping floors; and lifting, carrying and emptying trash and refuse containers.
  • May perform basic building tasks including: measuring and cutting materials using hand and power saws; performing both interior and exterior painting work; and performing basic plumbing tasks such as unplugging drains using plungers and/or powered rooters.
  • Driving standard and automatic transmission vehicles as assigned including tractors, pick-up trucks, and dump trucks.
  • Potholes City's streets.

Ideal candidates will possess the following:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • OR training and experience performing heavy manual labor tasks requiring operation of a variety of manual and mechanical equipment.
  • A valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License, Group B, with Air Brakes and N (tank) Endorsement preferred

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver's license and be able to operate standard transmission vehicles.
  • May require MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training
  • Applicant selected to fill this position may be required as a condition of employment, to participate in an employer paid Hepatitis B inoculation program.
  • Applicant selected may be required as a condition of employment to be trained on operation of a wide variety of power equipment including, but not limited to tool cats, skid steers and forklifts.
  • Must complete Background Authorization Form (see link below)

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own to hear, walk, climb, sit, stand, reach, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, and have visual acuity and the ability to lift 25 pounds routinely 95 pounds occasionally.

Pay: $588.80 per week

Expected hours: 25 – 40 per week
