The City of Lansing's Police Department is seeking a full-time Detention Officer to join their professional Law Enforcement team.

The Detention Officer is a civilian employee of the Police Department who processes arrestees, including booking, fingerprinting, and maintains custody and control.

The Detention Officer's overall goal is the safe and smooth operation of the City’s Detention Center.

Successful candidates will be quick learners, adaptive to ever changing policies and procedures, able to work well under pressure, able to multitask, remain calm in difficult situations, and are very attentive to details.

Pursuant to the City of Lansing's Teamsters 243 Collective Bargaining Agreement, "Two (2) seniority lists will be maintained : male and female.

A minimum of two (2) males and two (2) females shall be assigned to a shift". CURRENTLY , the City of Lansing Detention Unit is seeking to hire at least ONE (1) Female Detention Officer.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : This position requires that the applicant placed be able to be bonded under the terms of the City's blanket bond.

Therefore, applicants have committed any dishonest acts, before or after placement in the position. Applicants must authorize the release of any information from appropriate agencies regarding the applicants' criminal history prior to being given referral consideration.

As such, CANDIDATE WILL BE SUBJECT TO A COMPLETE AND THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION Completed Background Authorization Form, FCRA, and MAST Questionnaire must be uploaded / attached to application.

This position also requires candidates to successfully complete a minimum 4hr Job Shadow in the Detention facility and speak with a Detention Recruiting Officer to make sure you understand the responsibilities and demands of the position and are willing to work the required hours before testing or an interview will be scheduled.

MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK 12 HOUR SHIFTS INCLUDING NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS AND VARIOUS OVERTIME ASSIGNMENTS : 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am with mandatory overtime up to 16 hours and voluntary overtime up to 18 hours;

additionally, in the first year of employment, schedules are rotated every six weeks from day to night.

IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING :

  • Graduation from a high school or the equivalent as established by state-recognized high school equivalency certification;
  • AND one of the following : Six months of full time paid experience as a security guard, security officer, law enforcement officer, correctional officer, traffic officer, park ranger, direct care worker, or residential technician which provides experience safeguarding objects, materials, or people;
  • OR Six months of experience as police explorer, police cadet, police aide; OR Six months of full-time service, with satisfactory performance, in the United States Armed Forces;
  • OR One year as a reservist in the United States Armed Forces or as a member of the National Guard, with satisfactory performance that includes completion of basic training and military school (copy of DD-214 must be included in application packet, if applicable);

OR Completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units from a recognized college or university or military equivalent.

  • Corrections Officer Vocational Program or the County and Local Detention Officer program requiring a minimum of 23 term or 15 semester credits approved by the Corrections Commission and the State Civil Service Commission, preferred.
  • Proficiency in computer skills; word processing and data entry (MS Word / MS Excel).
  • LEIN and Taser certified, preferred.
  • Bilingual, preferred.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities i.e. mental illnesses, substance abuse, and etc., preferred.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INLCUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO :

  • Administer daily Preliminary Breath Test for pre-sentences offenders.
  • Daily preparation and release of all arraigned detainees to the Ingham County Jail.
  • Operate the departments' main Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) terminal and responds to all LEIN and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) local and federal confirmation requests.
  • Takes runaway reports and enters the information on the LRMS (Lansing Report Management System) computer terminal.
  • Distribute food and medicine, as prescribed, to detainees.
  • Escort detainees to and from their cells, and may accompany Court Officers with them to judicial proceedings.

PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS :

This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own have the abilities of standing, walking, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, seizing, holding, turning, speaking, hearing, listening, lifting, finger dexterity and / or feeling and visual acuity.

  • Must be able to pass the City of Lansing’s respirator physical and be able to wear a respirator.
  • Must be able to do a Scot Air Pack / Gas Mask.

SELECTION PROCESS : A LEIN check, job shadow, assessment testing, interview, extensive background investigation / fingerprints, psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical / drug screen, and uniform fitting will be given to all persons referred, upon successfully passing each step.
