City of Lancaster is Hiring an Equipment Operator 1 Near PA, PA

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trucks and other automotive equipment and for promptly performing assignments according to an established routine. Operation of vehicles shall be under an approved Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B or A as required

  • Follows safe practices in the performance of duties.
  • Drives a dump truck to haul construction materials and supplies for street construction, water and sewer installation, and repair of various other public works projects.
  • Operates a truck mounted snowplow and drives a dump truck with a trailer.
  • Experience in maneuvering, connecting, and disconnecting trailers, leaf-pickers, vacuum trailers, and other attached or towable equipment. 
  • Performs manual labor involving loading and unloading trucks, digging of ditches, felling and trimming of trees, cutting brush, and similar tasks.
  • Operates a rubber tire loader in general maintenance work and snow removal operations.
  • Drives tractors for cutting grass.
  • Uses a jackhammer and other power-driven equipment.
Bureau of Sewer Collections and Water T&D
  1. Safely operates and maintains a Vactor truck for system maintenance and repair, including but not limited to, hydro-excavation OR for cleaning and maintaining components of Wastewater Collection system.

Education, Training and Experience 

  • Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.

Bureau of Streets

  1. Prior CDL experience preferred.
  2. Snow remove and paving experience preferred.
  3. Experience working around motorized or moving equipment and machinery i.e. Backhoe preferred.

Licenses and Certificates 

  • Streets Department: Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and one year of experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment. Preference will be given to candidates with a Class A license.
  • Water T&D and Wastewater Collections: Possession of a Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a tanker endorsement (N) and/or the ability to obtain the tanker endorsement (N) within 3 months of hire.
  • Construction/Pipe Crew: Possession of a Class B commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the ability to obtain a Class A commercial license within 3 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
  • Proficient use of hand tools is required.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.
  • Ability to safely enter/exit and work within manholes and/or confined spaces is required.
  • Ability to climb up/down ladder wells and climb unprotected heights is required.
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and to maintain positive interactions is required. 
  • Positive interpersonal skills are required.
  • Proven ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • Proven ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English is required.

  • Personal Protective Equipment such as hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, rain gear, steel toed safety shoes, rain boots and respirators.

Bureau of Sewer Collections and Water T&D
  • Requires heavy manual lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Requires standing, bending, walking and sitting and climbing in the performance of duties up to eight (8) or more hours a day.
  • Requires the use of air tools, hydraulic tools, and/or electric tools such as jackhammers, pavement saws, tampers.
 
All Bureaus
  • Knowledge, skills and/or abilities assessment tests may be conducted as part of the position screening process.
  • Requires working long hours, overtime and set-schedule shifts (AM OR PM) as necessary to conduct business operations.
  • Must be available to handle emergency situations after hours, weekends and holidays.
