City of Lakewood (CO) is Hiring a Maintenance Worker-Streets Landscape Near Lakewood, WA

This is an AFSCME represented Maintenance Worker-Streets Landscape position. The City of Lakewood now participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

This is a regular, full-time, limited term position with an anticipated end date of 12/31/2026.

 This positing is open until filled or otherwise closed.

Under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent or designee, perform a full range of maintenance tasks up to and including journey level work to implement City work programs. Depending on the assigned work area, perform a variety of duties for a full range of maintenance for facilities, parks, streets, or street landscape divisions. Provide logistical support and assistance for City programs and special events. Select and operate trucks, construction and maintenance equipment (motorized and non-motorized) in performing maintenance and improvement tasks for facilities, parks, streets, right-of-ways, public easements, and drainage systems.

Streets Landscape:

Mow turf using riding and walk behind mowers; edge, trim, and maintain landscape areas, structures, and pathways; abate graffiti and repair vandalism; trim, prune, and shape trees and shrubs; fertilize, aerate, top dress, and thatch landscape areas; apply fertilizers, pesticides, and vegetation control; install, operate, test, trouble shoot, and repair irrigation systems; perform light repair/maintenance on small engines.

Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition; operate various types of vehicles to transport materials and personnel; prepare and maintain records, such as daily reports identifying specific work duty activities and time allotments; respond to inquiries from the public providing information within scope of knowledge and position; respond to emergency situations as necessary; remove trash, debris, and dead animals from roadways; assist in training team members in safety and maintenance procedures and practices; perform flagger duties.

Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Actively champion a culture of and commitment to workplace safety through everyday actions and leadership.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Any combination equivalent to two (2) years of experience in parks/streets landscape (commercial or public grounds) position AND/OR relevant education, training, or certificate. This is a relevant combination of two (2) years.

License and Certification Requirements

Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and safe driving record by hire date and throughout employment. 

Successful passing of background and reference checks, and driving record/abstract review. Applicants selected to interview must provide a driving record abstract at their expense, which is available at a minimal cost from the WA State Department of Licensing.

Satisfactory physical condition as evidenced by a City-approved medical examination. An offer of employment is conditioned upon passing a medical examination and drug screening. 

Traffic flagger certification required within 90 days of hire date and maintained throughout employment.

CPR/First Aid certification required within six (6) months of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Be on standby status for after-hour and holiday emergencies on a rotating schedule.

Pesticide applicator’s license required within six (6) months of employment and maintained throughout employment.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Standard methods of operation, maintenance, and repair for assigned function.

Tools, equipment, and materials used in maintenance and repair of assigned function.

City of Lakewood maintenance programs.

Hazards and safe practices associated with maintenance and repair work.

Basic requirements of maintaining assigned function in a safe, secure, clean, and orderly manner.

Safe practices for operating, maintaining, and performing minor repairs on a variety of equipment.

Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.

First aid and applicable safety precautions.

Proper vehicle load distribution and securing methods.

Occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to working around traffic and moving equipment.

ABILITY TO:

Work flexible schedules, rotating shifts, and call backs on evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Operate all machinery, tools, and equipment in a safe and proficient manner.

Maneuver vehicles through traffic and into tight spaces to accomplish loading and unloading.

Work independently with minimal direction and complete daily activities according to work schedule.

Maintain accurate records.

Obtain and maintain all appropriate certifications and licenses.

Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

Maintain regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships. 

Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

Follow procedures and clearly defined standards.

Document daily activities accurately.

Operate a variety of trucks and related motorized vehicles and equipment.

Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

Estimate material quantities and weights in relation to the equipment assigned.

Work outdoors and operate vehicles for extended periods under all weather conditions.

Perform preventative maintenance and make adjustments and emergency repairs to equipment.

Read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in both office and field and/or outdoor environments and requires travel to a variety of locations to perform work. Exposure to various weather conditions, traffic hazards, and hazards from obstacles and open trenches associated with construction sites. May be required to enter tight and confined spaces by crawling, climbing, or descending into the space. 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Regularly required to perform sustained repetitive hand motion associated with the operation of motor vehicles, hand and power tools; heavy manual labor; work in confined spaces and around high levels of noise. Ability to sustain continuous physical effort including bending, walking, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, carrying, standing, sitting, manipulation of and lifting of heavy equipment, lifting or moving 50 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving more than 100 pounds with assistance. Ability to hear and understand verbal and written instruction, and to communicate with others to exchange information. Job requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

HAZARDS

Regularly works near moving mechanical parts; may work in high, precarious places; frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and equipment vibration; occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock; outdoor heat and occasional wildfire smoke during summer months. The noise level is usually loud.
