City of Lafayette, Colorado is Hiring a Fleet Mechanic Near Lafayette, CO


Maintains assigned equipment for the City, Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department. Performs a full range of automotive, large and small equipment, and other mechanical work as assigned. Performs tune-ups, electrical repairs, major overhauls, welding, as well as routine service repair duties to trucks, cars, tractors, etc.

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
  • Inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair mechanical defects in automobiles, heavy equipment, specialized mowing equipment, golf carts, utility trucks, aerators, sweepers, small equipment, and other mechanical equipment used in parks and open space maintenance work.
  • Disassemble engines or motors, and perform general overhauling; install and adjust brakes, batteries, tires, wiring, and glass; grind valves, repair transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, high pressure pumps, valves.
  • Occasional emergency repairs out of the shop; welding and acetylene operations; back lapping and sharpening of mower reels and blades. 
  • Regularly inspect equipment condition, cost of repairs and the preventative maintenance program, spot check equipment for performance in the field.
  • Responsible for the ordering of repair parts and replacement supplies; assist in parts inventory; maintain a complete set of records, files, and work orders for all equipment; manage account funds.
  • May operate more complex equipment in conjunction with training. 
  • Train employees in proper operation, safety and service of equipment.
  • Responsible for shop area maintenance, safety and cleanliness.
  • Will act as back up for City Fleet Services and prioritize repairs for emergency equipment including fire vehicles, police vehicles and public works snow response equipment.
  • May be on call for snow shift and prepared to respond to emergencies as needed including weekends and holidays.
  • May be required to work in the field with Parks and Open Space staff and perform field tasks including mowing, aeration, weed treatment etc.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.
KNOWLEDGE: Basic knowledge of safety practices and procedures; working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatus; theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines; hydraulic systems, transmissions and differentials; electrical motors and vehicles; other general repair techniques.
SKILL:  Use of wide variety of equipment repair and diagnostic tools; the making of various types of mechanical repair.
ABILITY:  Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and do skilled repair work; prepare estimates of time and materials needed; oversee the work of others; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, and the public.
TRAINING: High School diploma or equivalent, required. ASE certifications, technical trade school, or specialized training preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years specialized equipment repair experience with specific repairing and maintaining of professional grounds maintenance equipment. with experience repairing and maintaining back hoes, skid steers dump trucks, professional lawn mowers, etc. or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the functions of the position.Colorado driver’s license and a safe driving record are required. Commercial Driver’s License B preferred.
