City of Kinston is Hiring a Parks Superintendent Near Kinston, NC

Performs advanced technical work overseeing the development and maintenance of parks and grounds areas, facilities and equipment, and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation. Division supervision is exercised over all assigned personnel.
  • Plans, organizes, directs and participates in the work of crews engaged in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks and grounds areas, facilities and equipment.
  • Inspects areas and facilities for conformance to maintenance and safety standards.
  • Prepares and processes purchase orders and invoices.
  • Assists in the recruitment and selection process.
  • Processes new hire paperwork and reports.
  • Oversees division personnel administration; evaluates employee performance; recommends promotions, salary increases, disciplinary action and termination.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports on division activities, equipment maintenance and safety checklists.
  • Responds to citizen inquires on division activities or need for services.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in park administration, horticulture, or related field and moderate experience in park design, construction and maintenance activities including some supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, tools and materials used in park maintenance and construction.
  • Thorough knowledge of general building, equipment, repair and maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of forestry, landscaping, and horticulture as applied to parks and grounds areas.
  • Thorough knowledge of the grasses, flowers, shrubs and trees grown in the area, their planting time and their soil requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in construction work.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
  • Possession of North Carolina Department of Agriculture Certified Pesticide Operators License (Turf and Ornamental Category) and North Carolina Division of Water Quality Turfgrass Nutrient Management training certification.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions; work requires depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
