City of Key West is Hiring a Director of Engineering Near Key West, FL

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

  • This is a management position that serves City departments in support of technical engineering services for a variety of projects. This position directs professional and paraprofessional employees in a variety office functions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant City Manager and is evaluated through conferences, reports and review of finished work-product.

DUTIES/TASKS/JOBS:

  • Direct Engineering Services staff on construction and project planning and inspection, as well as engineering project management, including contract administration for all City projects.
  • Manage the work activities, functions, follow-up, budgets and general administration of the department.
  • Determine the minimum standards for all aspects of construction, planning, design and repairs.
  • Direct and maintain the Capital Improvement Program as assigned.
  • Assist in the selection of outside contractors and/or consultants to perform work for the City.
  • Attend and participate in conferences and meetings regarding various department projects, City Commission and various board meetings as required.
  • Coordinate intergovernmental construction and project planning.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures pertaining to the management of the department.
  • Direct the preparation of budgets for the department.
  • Monitor budgets and provide periodic updates to the City Manager as required.
  • Interviews and hires candidates as departmental openings occur.
  • Plans, organizes and supervises the work of departmental employees, provides opportunities for training, provides performance feedback to staff, counsel employees and administers discipline as required.
  • Assists in determining department contribution to City’s long- and short-term goals and objectives.
  • Acts in the capacity of City Engineer.
  • Perform other duties or tasks as deemed necessary by the City Manager or designee.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ABILITIES/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to organize and manage in a manner maintaining good working relations between assigned staff, other City departments, city commission, outside agencies, consultants and the general public.
  • Ability to express facts and ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulatory codes related to the development and construction of public and private improvement projects.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices, techniques, methods, procedures, principles and ability to apply them.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering related to municipal government operations.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing a technical staff, developing budgets, general office and administrative functions.
  • Five (5) years relevant supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Seven (7) years of senior management, public or private sector employment in related fields, preference in public government sector.
  • Knowledge and experience in public sector, construction and project planning and inspection, as well as engineering practices and principles, including contract administration.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's license within 30 days of employment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Professional Engineer certification.
  • If PE is from a state other than Florida, must obtain and maintain Florida PE within one year of employment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $128,552.00 - $137,571.00 per year
