CITY OF KENOSHA is Hiring a SUMMER LABORER - HYDRANT FLUSHING PROGRAM Kenosha Water Utility Near Kenosha, WI

General Overview of Position

THIS RECRUITMENT IS TARGETED TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ENJOY WORKING OUTDOORS AND ARE ONLY LOOKING FOR SUMMER EMPLOYMENT, AND WHO ARE AVAILABLE TO WORK MONDAY-FRIDAY (7AM-3:30PM) EXCLUDING HOLIDAYS. The Kenosha Water Utility (KWU) provides municipal water and wastewater services to nearly 110,000 people in the greater Kenosha metropolitan area, which is ideally located on Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago. Under the direction of the Director of Engineering Services or other KWU Engineering staff, this summer position assists with annual fire hydrant flushing program required by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Primary duties include: inspecting the hydrants and noting any deficiencies, flushing the hydrants to test for adequate flow and pressure; and taking measurements and recording information onto a tablet. In the event of inclement weather, work schedule may be reduced or maintenance duties may be assigned (i.e., grounds keeping, building maintenance).

Example of Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inspects all components of each hydrant and notes any deficiencies or leakage.
  • Opens and closes hydrant valve slowly to prevent water hammer or damage to the water distribution system.
  • Flushes hydrant for the required period of time; directs water away from traffic, pedestrians, underground utility vaults and private property.
  • Takes measurements/readings and makes appropriate computations; enters data into tablet.
  • Verifies GPS location of hydrant as indicated on the tablet.
  • Performs light maintenance duties on hydrant parts (i.e., cleaning, lubrication).
  • Reads and interprets maps and diagrams of municipal water facilities.
  • Operates related tools and equipment associated with job duties.
  • Operates light truck or other Class D vehicle to travel from each job site.
  • Adheres to safety protocols associated with job duties.
  • Responds appropriately to on-site inquiries from citizens regarding work being performed out in the field.
  • May perform other unskilled or semi-skilled duties, such as grounds keeping or building maintenance, as needed.

Requirements

Education/Training/Other Requirements:

  • Age 18 or older.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver license with good driving record.
  • If offered employment, must pass a driving record review, criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn quick and focus on assignments.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps and written instructions.
  • Ability to take measurements and record data on tablet.
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools and Class D vehicle.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate appropriately with Utility staff and the general public.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress associated with this type of work.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing tasks and operating equipment and tools related to this position.
  • Ability to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time, including the ability to walk or stand on rough or uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • May be required to ascend/descend ladder or stairs.
Sensory Requirements:
  • Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities and differences in job-related objects, materials and tasks. Such sensory characteristics include: colors, shapes/textures, sounds, odors and distance/depth.
Environmental Requirements:
  • Job duties are performed primarily outdoors with occasional exposure to adverse environmental conditions which require adherence to safe work practices, such as: temperature/weather variations, odors, noise, wetness, traffic hazards, and/or dust.
  • Some tasks may be performed indoors as assigned.
