Job Description Summary

Under general direction of the Criminal Investigations Bureau Sergeant, provide a wide range of specialized services and analytical products used by local law enforcement officers for use in prevention of future crimes, solving crimes, and other enforcement activities. Acquire, analyze, prepare and disseminate information relevant to actual and anticipated crime and disorder; analyze internal data to increase department efficiency. Work varies; interpretive judgment is required within generally prescribed standards and procedures. The Crime Analyst is a civilian/non-sworn position.


Job Responsibilities

Perform crime analysis support functions for the entire organization with a primary focus on criminal investigation bureau cases, requiring independent judgment and a high level of confidentiality using tact, discretion and diplomacy; research and prepare analytical reports; collect, objectively analyze, interpret, evaluate, and disseminate crime data developing crime series, patterns, and suspect profiles; utilize various databases and software to analyze and interpret crime data; develop reports/bulletins identifying criminal activity suspect information and crime trends; Utilize Geographic Information Systems to produce computer generated maps displaying crime activity geographically; provide and present crime information, trends, statistics, and or forecasts; perform data management, research, and analytical duties; develop and disseminate various reports/bulletins identifying criminal activity suspect information and crime trends; assist in providing verbal briefings and presentations when required; respond to internal and external requests for information from police, operational and administrative staff, and other law enforcement agencies; facilitate the exchange of crime information within the police department with other agencies; identify repeat offenders to assist in crime analysis; identify and report spatial and temporal trends and patterns of criminal activity; provide officers and supervisory staff with objective analyses to assist in problem solving, scheduling and directed patrol; determine and apply appropriate methods for accessing, downloading, and analyzing data from existing RMS database; develop and instruct training programs regarding the development and application of crime analysis information for police staff and the general public; conduct computer searches for suspects using vehicle information, phone numbers, suspect acquaintances, and or addresses; formulate research methods for accurate reporting; develop and disseminate various administrative statistical reports and studies; attend meetings to maintain current knowledge of latest technology, crime analysis processes, etc; conduct criminal intelligence gathering on individuals suspected of being involved in ongoing criminal endeavors; monitor UCR crime data reported to the State and conduct random audits to assure accurate reporting; prepare a summary of FBI Index statistical data for management review prior to publication; coordinate with supervisors in charge of special operation details to provide support and assistance in scanning, analysis, response and assessment of targeted projects; develop databases to help assess the effectiveness of targeted projects. Perform overtime as required and other duties as assigned.


Minimum Education & Requirements

College degree with major course work in computer science, research methods, statistics, criminal justice, geography, social sciences, or equivalent work experience preferred. Prior crime or intelligence analyst experience performing technical (non-clerical) support or analytical work including quantitative analysis, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing reports and summaries. Ability to achieve International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) or similar certification within two years and Cell Brite, Pen Link, and other forensic tools within twelve months. Excellent writing, editing, communication, and computer skills with a valid driver’s license required.
