City of Jacksonville Beach is Hiring a Grounds Maintenance Worker I Near Jacksonville, FL

JOB SUMMARY
This position performs semiskilled manual work in in the landscape, maintenance, and repair of public properties and infrastructure; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Grounds Crew Leader. Work may be specialized according to assigned department or division.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending terrain, ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Hearing: Required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Visual Acuity: Required for use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Vocal Communication: Required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, working in confined spaces and wearing an appropriate respiratory protection device as necessary. The worker may be exposed to blood borne and/or waterborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.Installs, constructs, repairs, and maintains various types of public grounds and infrastructure including parks, golf course, ball fields, cemetery, right-of-ways, and other public properties. Representative tasks may include any or all of the following:
  • Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, and other materials, tools, and equipment. 
  • Digs trenches and ditches and cleans catch basins and drainage lines. 
  • Prepares athletic fields and golf course. 
  • Mows grass, trims shrubs and bushes, and maintains grounds.
  • Seeds, fertilizes, and aerates golf course and fields.
  • Places sod and plants grass, bushes, trees, and flowers.
  • Picks up paper and debris on public property, streets, and in park areas.
  • Operates dump trucks, mowers, chain saws, pumps, mixers, trimmers, tractors, and similar equipment. 
  • Runs errands and picks up parts.
  • Inspects and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles for proper use and care. 
  • Performs custodial, building, and grounds maintenance work. 
  • May serve as pesticide applicator if qualified and certified.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

A high school diploma or equivalent.
Special Qualifications:
A driver’s license valid in the State of Florida. License or certification may be required for the safe handling and application of chemicals or other substances.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in landscape and grounds maintenance. 
  • Knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public. 
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. 
  • Ability to perform overtime, holiday, and weekend work as needed.
  • Ability to be alert to traffic and aware of both safe and unsafe procedures and situations that may occur or be present while operating City equipment or a City vehicle. 
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
