The successful candidate in this position will perform routine tasks and one-time projects related to water maintenance. Work is performed cooperatively and in a manner that ensures individual, team and public safety.The Storm and Sewer Division owns and operates more than 50 ponds, 6 certified dams, 140 miles of stormwater pipe, 7,500 catch basins, 4 sewer lift stations and 85 miles of sanitary sewer main lines. Some of the equipment our team uses on a regular basis for maintenance and repair of these systems are; vacuum/jet truck, bobcat mower, excavator, roadside mower, traffic attenuator, backhoes, loaders, and more! Bring your experience to supplement the talented crew or learn to run heavy equipment through hands on training.

Public Works Maintenance Worker: Positions assigned as a Public Works Maintenance Worker range from those developing and learning to those proficient in most tasks associated with the work of the assigned division. Incumbents begin by learning to master the safe operation of tools and equipment starting out with significant guidance from higher level positions. As they progress, they achieve a journey level mastery in their classification, becoming adept at regular tasks and able to safely operate most equipment necessary for typical tasks. While they achieve independence in routine tasks, direction may still be required for complex tasks and specific equipment operation. Continued skill and certification enhancement sets the path for further advancements within Public Works Maintenance. 
Future Growth Opportunity/Lateral Transfer available: Public Works Senior Maintenance Worker
Movement to the Public Works Senior Maintenance Worker level is dependent upon mastery of complex tasks and equipment, obtainment of all necessary certifications, and demonstration of ability to lead others and create a positive work environment. Employees in these positions will provide guidance and training to less experienced workers and may provide work direction on a small crew. 
A Lateral transfer may be placed at either level, but will be considered for Senior Maintenance Worker if the training and experience meet the requirements.

  • Uses a variety of hand tools and light equipment such as shovels, picks, hand and small riding mowers, light trucks.
  • Performs assigned work to assist in the installation or repairs of stormwater/sewer lines, manholes and catch basins
  • Digs holes and moves pipe; backfills excavation.
  • Performs the handling and/or application of hazardous materials in accordance with state regulations.
  • Some asphalt patching, filling potholes, paving, and sweeping.
  • Assists in maintaining storm and sewer lift station equipment and facilities.
  • Performs basic carpentry, cement work and painting as necessary.
  • Equipment, material, and supplies transport to various work sites.
  • Customer service responding to public inquiries and concerns related to public infrastructure.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of activities, including work orders, parts used, labor hours, and safety issues. 
  • Performs work in accordance with Departmental SOPs, OSHA/WSHA rules and guidelines, and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations. 
  • Responds to emergency situations as necessary for citywide, department, and/or division specific events.
    • Examples: snow removal, flood response, wind, ice, and power outage events.
High School diploma, or G.E.D., and six months experience in road/water construction and maintenance or related work; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability, required performing the job.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid WA State driver’s license with driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
Candidates with the following certifications are highly desirable. If the candidate does not have these, the City pays for training to obtain the following:
  • CDL with Class ‘A’ endorsement or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
  • Water Distribution Specialist I (or OIT) certificate or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
  • Flagger certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
  • First aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
OTHERQualified candidates must pass a criminal background check and physical exam prior to hire. 
  • Some knowledge of maintenance equipment, construction, and repair methods and procedures.
  • Some knowledge of safety standards and precautions related to the work. Ability to use the mechanical tools of the trade.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language. Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions. Ability to work cooperatively in a work crew.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions, and in dirty, uncomfortable conditions.
  • Ability to sustain continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulation of, and heavy lifting of heavy departmental equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Skill in using the hand tools and equipment of the laboring trade.
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and according to the City’s Standby requirements when on call.
  • Ability to work at heights.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, including ability to access confined spaces through a utility manhole.
