About our Department :

The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is located near the City's downtown business and historic districts. Huntsville has 3 Police Precincts, approximately 500 sworn officers, 200 civilian personnel and patrols an area around 220 square miles.

HPD is a "Professional Law Enforcement Organization" utilizing modern technology, state of the art equipment and comprehensive training techniques.

The Department is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency through the "Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement" (CALEA).

The Huntsville Police Department employs individuals of diverse backgrounds, education and experience. Candidates for employment are recruited from all areas of the country and from all walks of life.

Part-Time Police Officer Position Overview :

This is law enforcement work in the protection of life and property through, investigation of a specialized nature, assistance to citizens, arrest and detention, and related activities.

Work involves prevention of crime, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, investigations of a specialized nature, apprehension of criminals, internal investigations, special assignments, enforcement of laws, regulations, ordinances, security work in safeguarding employees, public property and any special assignments designated and approved by the Chief of Police. Performs front desk duty.

Qualifications and Necessary Special Requirements :

High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.

Must be an APOSTC certified law enforcement officer who honorably retired in good standing with no pending disciplinary action.

Must meet specific requirements as stipulated by the Alabama Peace Officer Handbook : Training Commission and other legal criteria as required.

Successfully complete a polygraph examination.

Valid Driver's License.

The City of Huntsville offers the following benefits, sick leave, holiday pay and retirement, for its regular, part-time employees.

Part-time employees are not eligible for paid vacation, overtime or other benefits.

A valid driver's license is a necessary special requirement for this position. Do you have a valid driver's license?

You will be required to complete 12 hours of Alabama Peace Officer Standard & Training Commission (APOSTC) provided by the Huntsville Police Academy on an annual basis.

Can you meet this requirement?

All sworn Huntsville Police Department personnel are required to complete a biennial Physical Abilities Test during continuing education in-service training.

Can you meet this requirement?

Do you acknowledge that applicants who have not maintained their APOSTC certification and have been retired longer than 10 years cannot be recertified by the Huntsville Police Academy and are not eligible for hire / rehire as a part-time police officer?

Do you acknowledge that you must meet specific requirements as stipulated by the Alabama Peace Officer Handbook : Training Commission and other legal criteria as required?
