GENERAL FUNCTIONS
Under general supervision, assists public with basic library services, shelves materials accurately.

2. Assists library patrons both onsite and via telephone or email with routine reference and information inquiries.
3. Manages public computer services and assists library patrons in use of public computers; assists public in use of basic library resources including audio-visual equipment and computers;
provides maintenance of such equipment.
4. Explains and enforces library rules; may be required to assist library staff to correct inappropriate conduct including handling persons who may be suffering from substance abuse or mental illness and are potentially violent.
5. Process new library materials; may assist with mending, cleaning, and / or preservation of library materials; may assist in bindery preparation.
6. Performs routine clerical functions such as packaging, receiving and routing mail, answering telephones, filing, and typing.
7. Performs simple janitorial functions as required or directed.
8. Carries out other tasks as required or assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic library organization, general reference materials, bibliographic search techniques, Dewey Decimal classification system, reader interests, books and authors and use of Online Public Access Catalog desired.
Knowledge of computers, current technology and excellent customer service skills required. Working knowledge of modern office practices and equipment required.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; basic math and alphabetization required. Familiarity with audio-visual equipment and data processing equipment desired.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
DECISION MAKING RESPONSIBILITIES
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY
None.
EXTERNAL VISIBILITY / CONTACT
Constant daily contact with public in person and in answering telephone. Requires well developed communications skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the general public, library staff, volunteers and others contacted in performances of assigned tasks.
Must work effectively as a member of a team. Low frequency of exposure to hazardous working conditions in dealing with angry confrontational members of the public.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Office environment. Must be available for evenings and weekend work. Nature of public service demand requires ability to respond to changes in schedule and assignments without undue diminution of quality or productivity.
Physical abilities; required to stand, sit and walk for 3 or more hours per day, bend and stretch without limitation, lift up to 10 pounds at a time, and push a loaded book truck (with wheels) weighing up to 120 pounds.
