City of High Point is Hiring a Librarian II Near High Point, NC

Performs responsible professional and administrative work in Children’s Division including collection development, management and program planning for children and their families, and does related work as assigned. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Children’s Division Manager. Supervises professional and para-professional personnel as assigned.Essential Tasks
 
  • Supervises professional and paraprofessional staff to include scheduling, planning, and assigning duties, evaluating work performance, providing appropriate counsel and maintaining a variety of statistics and records
  • Provides reader advisory and reference service to the public communicating in person, by phone, or email.
  • Participates on hiring teams to evaluate applications, interviews, and selection of candidates
  • Plans and provides training sessions for staff including evaluating training needs, preparing written materials and oral presentations.
  • Manages outside community requests for library programming, and outreach events by assigning direct reports
  • Drives the bookmobile when necessary to childcare providers, and community events
  • Manages supervision of Junior Friends and other children volunteers for summer reading, programs, events, and meetings
  • Plans and conducts active and passive programs at the library, including signature events like the Spring Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, Summer Jubilee, Holiday Stroll and others
  • Creates or approves flyers digitally and in print for promoting programs, literacy, libraries, and seasonal changes.
  • Assists in managing the Main and Outreach Collection through standard collection development and management recommendations. Maintains the main collection by statistical analysis.
  • Acts as public relations representative to the community for public schools, private schools, homeschool groups, businesses, other city entities etc.
    1. tours, teacher packs, field trips, online resources, and representing the library at community events.
  • Assist in division budget preparation involving projecting future needs, assists in ordering and receiving supplies and equipment necessary for programs.
  • Assists in grant writing to securing funding for different library projects.
  • Collaborates with other divisions to achieve the library’s mission and values.
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations, participates in professional conferences and meetings, and keeps informed and current in the fields of Library Science, Children’s Library Services, and Management and Leadership. 
Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.Qualifications
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Formal education-Master’s Degree in Library Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Certifications-Holds or is Eligible for NC Public librarian certification
  • 3 or more years of public library experience
  • 3 or more years of supervisory work experience
  • 3 or more years of experience working with children in a professional setting
 
Preferred Skills
  • A high degree of initiative, with the ability to work independently.
  • College course work in Early Childhood Development, Education, or experience with children preferred.
  • Creative or artistic interests preferred.
 
Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants.
Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle, or addressing an audience.
  • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
  • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
  • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
  • Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly.

    2. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and

  • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to direct and oversee the use of arithmetic and/or statistics in the preparation of a variety of tests and reports.
Language Ability:
  • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.
