City of High Point is Hiring a Lifeguard (High Point City Lake Park and Washington Terrace Park) Near Jamestown, NC

Ensures the safety of patrons of all ages at High Point City Lake and Washington Terrace aquatic facilities. Ensures cleanliness of facilities and administers first aid to patrons when necessary; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

******City of High Point will provide Lifeguard Certification through the American Red Cross at no charge ($275 value). Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is valid for two years.*****

  • Supervises recreational swimming and maintains observation of swimmers from pool deck or lifeguard chairs, rescues swimmers from life threatening situations if needed.
  • Provides security, crowd control, and information to facility users.
  • Instructs students enrolled in learn-to-swim classes, including children and adults.
  • Empties trash receptacles as needed, sweeps, and washes down pool deck daily, vacuums pool and cleans all scum-gutters.
  • Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of showers and pool bathrooms.
  • Assists in loading and unloading of supplies, chemicals, and operational equipment.
  • Assist in pre-season maintenance of pool, preparation for seasonal opening, and post-season maintenance for season closing.
  • Provides first-aid as required and completes accident reports.
  • Serves as concession operator as needed, maintains sales records and makes reports of needed supplies.
  • Participates in in-service training.
  • Works as pool cashier when needed, receives, and maintains revenue from pool entrance, balances ticket sales with attendance at closing.
  • Performs waterslide operation, including supervising users.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
 

Qualifications

  • Formal education, which includes basic arithmetic.
  • Must have valid Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, First Aid, and CPR by the start of the pool season.
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to work with people of all ages, individually and in groups.
  • Must be able to work most weekends, holidays and some evenings.
Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are necessary to converse with program participants, facility patrons, and coworkers.
Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to observe and interpret the surroundings of the outdoor setting to ensure the safety of program participants. Both eyes 20/25 – R 20/30 – L 20/30 corrected
  • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see teaching materials, notes, and other work items close at hand. Both eyes 20/22 corrected
  • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances in order to ensure the safety of program participants. Depth perception – 4
  • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span to observe and be aware of the outdoor setting while focusing on the participants receiving the program. Must be alert to surroundings.
  • Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye. Must be able to adjust eye lens to focus readily when glancing from near work (teaching materials, notes, etc.) to distance work (patrons walking along the trail, participants with questions, etc.) to monitor activities and ensure safety at all areas. 
  • Color Vision – Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Necessary to distinguish color from varying hues of gray. This can be important in case of an emergency to identify people by the color of their swimsuits and determine if one or more persons are involved in the situation.
Physical Strength – degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
  • Medium to Heavy Work
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Worker assists in lifting swimmers of varying weights from pool. Physical demand requirements are varied with the situations.
    • Work requires swimming, walking, standing, bending, lifting, and stooping, although worker does sit on occasions. There is significant use of arms, hands, feet, and legs.

    • Reaching - Extending the hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
    • Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s).
    • Fingering - Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily rather than the entire hand or arm.

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor or members of the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner; to understand and communicate with individuals of varying ages. Good judgement is important because the individual will interact directly with the public on a constant basis and may be working in the absence of a supervisor.
 Mathematics Ability
  • Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to use arithmetic to add and figure number of program participants and attendants, count money and make change, figure daily revenue collections, and make various reports. 
Language Ability
  • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position. Ability to be conversant in voice and diction to participate in discussions in person and by telephone.
 Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings
  • The Lifeguard is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Combining the type of work performed with the various weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in a hot environment.
Hazards
  • The Lifeguard will be exposed to working outside in a range of weather conditions and occasionally around controlled burning operations. Employee will be exposed to trash, garbage, and chemicals. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

  • Items which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work: Office supplies, Gates, doors, stairs, miscellaneous pool equipment, picnic tables, drink dispenser, ice machine, throw rings, Shepard’s crooks, ladders, lifeguard chairs (5 step, 10 ft high), hand tools, paint brush, cash register, pool vacuum machine, First Aid equipment, respirator, various hoses and water control-valves.
