Job Description
Performs routine skilled work performing maintenance on Library property involving the use of specialized equipment; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Building Maintenance Coordinator.
Essential Tasks

  • Performs and assists in library grounds maintenance including pruning, trimming, spraying, watering, planting and general care of grass, plants and trees; including the Teaching Garden, Arts and Education Plaza, Sensory Garden and building custodial needs.
  • Rakes and edges where needed.
  • Spray general landscape maintenance chemicals, under the supervisor's direction; using hand or backpack pump sprayer.
  • Prepare seed beds, lay sod, spread seed, lime, fertilizer and straw.
  • Weed, mulch, prepare plant beds and plant flowers.
  • Set up hose and sprinklers, and under supervision, turn on automatic irrigation system.
  • Pick up trash, empty trash containers and replace bags.
  • Clean and perform simple maintenance on equipment.
  • Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Clean restrooms; Vacuum; Sweep; Mop; Clean windows; Paint facilities; Assist with moving items as needed; Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Assist in the upkeep and basic maintenance of buildings.
  • Assist with set up and tear down of Farmer's Market during the April - October season; Assist with set up and clean up following other community events held on the library grounds.
  • Assist with Snow Removal.
Qualifications

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and practical situations and requests made by supervisor or members of the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner. Good judgment is important because often the individual may be working in absence of supervisor.
  • Using Arithmetic: Ability to apply fundamental concepts of addition and subtraction to arrive at accurate formulas for chemical and paint mixtures.
  • Ability to read safety manuals, instructions, directions, formulas, landscaping books and other documents relating to the job.
  • Ability to write figures and measurements.
  • Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with other employees and the general public. Must be polite and courteous when dealing with the public and answering their questions.
  • On-the-job Training approximately 8 weeks. Formal education which includes basic arithmetic and/or business math. Some experience in groundskeeping using the trade tools and equipment is desirable.
  • Knowledge on the following equipment- Push mowers, weed-eaters, backing and operating vehicle with a trailer attached, power hand tools, pruning saws and shears, hydraulic powered riding equipment, rakes, sprinklers, irrigation equipment, water hoses, buckets, backpack blowers, hedge trimmer, basic hand tools and Personnel Resolution.
  • Must have valid appropriate driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina. Must be able to work on weekends when necessary. Must be able to work with all types of people and in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
  • Must be able to work with chemicals, gas and oil.
  • Must have capability of being trained in the basic tasks pertaining to library maintenance operation.
  • Must be able to understand and carry out instructions from the supervisor.
  • Must make responsible decisions in an expedient manner.
  • Lawn maintenance and or paid gardening experience preferred.
Special Requirements

Physical Requirements
  • Medium to Heavy Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are varied with the different tasks. Work requires walking, standing, reaching, climbing, squatting, bending and stooping, although worker does sit on occasions.
  • Reaching, Handling, and Fingering: (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction, but normally to the front or side). (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingering not involved). (Fingering - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling).
  • Talking and/or Hearing: (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word). (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Both are required in order to communicate with the general public. Necessary to operate equipment safely and enforce safety regulations.
  • The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Recommended guidelines for vision are: Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see people at a distance in order to monitor their activities to ensure their safety around equipment. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected
    • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see equipment and work aids at close range in order to operate them properly. Both eyes 20/25 corrected.
    • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Necessary in order to properly operate equipment and monitor activities for regulation and safety. Depth Perception - 4.
    • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must be able to see wide span of area to cover grounds and observe people and their activities in order to enforce rules and regulations.
    • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye. Must be able to adjust eye lens to focus readily when glancing from near work (equipment operation, observer near at hand, etc.) to distance work (people walking around in vicinity of equipment) to monitor activities and ensure safety at all areas.
    • Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Necessary to distinguish color from varying hues of gray. This can be important when determining plant colors and in identifying other employees from park visitors by the color of their clothing.
Mental Activity/Requirements
Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of logical thinking combined with knowledge of principles and practices of public personnel and employment laws to work tasks and handle practical situations, comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in a timely fashion and exercise good judgment.
Mathematics Ability: Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to direct and oversee the use of arithmetic and/or statistics in the preparation of a variety of tests and reports.
Language Ability: The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.
Environmental Conditions
The Worker is subject to Outside and Inside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Combining the type of work performed with the various weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in a hot or cold environment. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting wet, dirty and sweaty for any reason not prohibited by law.
Employee will be exposed to trash, garbage, grass, plants and various chemicals and debris. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens.

Special Requirements
During the Farmer's Market Season (April - December) Saturdays are a required workday. Other Library events utilizing the exterior of the building may also be included in the schedule as they arise. A minimum of a high school diploma or GED certificate is required.

This position is forty hours a week which requires the following schedule: January through March: one full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) covering building custodial needs.
