CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: GROUNDS/MAINTENANCE WORKER

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled manual labor in support of assigned division. Duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining grounds, cleaning and repairing facilities/equipment, and opening and closing graves.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, such as trimming trees, removing stumps, planting trees and flowers, mowing, raking, mulching, removing trash and debris, shoveling snow, salting and sanding streets, filling holes, and performing related tasks.
  • Prepares and monitors the operation of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
  • Performs a variety of facilities maintenance tasks which may include cleaning park facilities and equipment, repairing and painting park shelters, tables, and benches, removing/installing playground equipment and fences, hanging flags, and performing related work.
  • Operates a variety of equipment in the performance of duties, which may include a dump truck, tamper, post hole digger, cutting torch, drill, chainsaw, tractor, leaf blower, leaf vacuum, shovel, pick ax, mechanic’s tools, and carpenter’s tools.
  • May open and close graves/mausoleums, pour footers, dig and backfill new graves sites, set tents, haul sand and gravel, and perform related work.
  • Moves or transports office supplies and furniture as directed.
  • Answers telephone and provides information, takes/relays messages, or refers to appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Maintain regular and predictable in-person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required.
  • Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City’s Drug and Alcohol policy.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required, necessary, or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 5 to 11 months previous experience and/or training involving groundskeeping, operating machinery and equipment, or related work preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well established policies, procedures and standards.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. 

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, or toxic agents.
