CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: CEMETERIES EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
 
The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated within cemeteries and other divisions as assigned.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
 

• Operates equipment and performs semi-skilled and manual work activities involving various city department functions; may be assigned to parks, cemetery, or other projects.
• Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department projects and activities, which may include a utility truck, backhoe, end loader, water truck, water pump, tractor, mower, weed eater, bush hog, leaf vacuum, body lift, saw, grinder, vacuum, shovel, rake, broom, mechanical tools, etc.
• Transports, loads and unloads refuse, equipment, and other materials. 
• Performs various tasks associated with cemetery operations, which may include coordinating burial activities, selling sites, locating sites, setting up tents/chairs for services, interring caskets, setting monuments, etc.
• Performs various manual labor functions associated with department projects and activities, which may include mowing/edging grass, spreading grass seed/straw/fertilizer, digging holes/trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, picking up debris/litter, etc.
• Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning building and work areas, etc.; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
• Utilizes safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
• Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, logs, interment/entombment orders, mausoleum layouts, invoices, and other documents.
• Receives various forms, reports, work orders, mausoleum layouts, invoices, receipts, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
• Communicates with supervisor, employees, city departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
• Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
• Maintains regular and predictable in person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required.
• Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City’s Drug and Alcohol policy.

 
 
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
 
Provides assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs related duties as required, necessary, or assigned.
 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in truck driving or equipment operation or supplemented by five (5) months previous experience driving trucks or equipment operation in assigned area; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments. 
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
