City of Hartford - Human Resources Department is Hiring a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (Part-Time) Near Hartford, CT

JOB
Vacancy is in the Department of Health and Human Services. Under supervision, provides breastfeeding support and education to Women, Infant and Children participants and breastfeeding support groups. This position requires experience with breastfeeding. Contacts Women, Infant and Children (WIC) participants on a periodic basis consistent with the WIC Peer Counseling Protocols or more frequently based on the individual participant’s needs. Counsels and provides basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC participants concerning basic breastfeeding information, the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and other related topics. Maintains and updates client records and adheres to WIC confidentiality requirements. In accordance with local agency established protocols, makes referrals to, and assists clients in the use of WIC or healthcare providers and other community lactation services. May attend and assist with prenatal group education, breastfeeding support groups, WIC staff meetings and/or breastfeeding workshops. Assists WIC staff in promoting various breastfeeding activities as needed. Performs related work as required. This is a Local 1716 Union Position. This is a Part-Time position. This is a grant-funded position, renewable per term of contract. The City of Hartford is not obligated to fund this position upon termination of funding.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination will be designed to measure the knowledge of the basic principles, practices, benefits, and barriers of breastfeeding. Knowledge of the WIC Program. Knowledge of community resources relating to breastfeeding. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other employees, representatives of other agencies, and the general public. Ability to interact with a diverse population. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain simple records and to perform a variety of routine clerical functions.

If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a City physician, a drug and alcohol screening examination, and a background check. If appointed, you will serve 3-12 months of probation. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations.
