Overview

The City of Gresham is seeking a Building Inspector 2 in Community Services to support the growing business needs of the Gresham Community and surrounding areas. The Building Inspection 2 is responsible for both residential and commercial building inspections and specializes in plumbing inspections. We are looking for an individual who wants to be part of a collaborative team environment, understands the value of quality customer service, and strives to utilize their knowledge to ensure the safety of the public in the commercial and residential structures in the Gresham Community.

Position Description

What you will get to do:
  • Inspect new and existing residential, commercial, and accessory buildings for compliance with applicable construction, safety, and specialty codes, and related City ordinances and regulations
  • Notify contractors and homeowners of violations and follow-up to ensure situations are corrected
  • Issue stop work orders based on non-compliance
  • Determine required repairs or replacement
  • Inspect health and safety complaints and violations
  • Provide information and assistance to contractors, builders, architects, homeowners, and the general public regarding codes, procedures, and compliance
  • Conduct field inspections and meet with contractors and builders for on-site plan review and code interpretation
  • Organize, prepare, and maintain records of inspection, plan reviews, and follow-up activities
  • Prepare a variety of records and reports, including letters regarding compliance
  • Prepare appropriate documentation of work
  • Provide expert guidance and support to other departments, the general public, and/or outside agencies
  • Coordinate activities with staff in other departments
  • Represent the City and department to the public, other agencies, government jurisdictions, committees, and organizations
  • Participate in meetings to remain current on state and local codes and ordinances

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • State of Oregon plumbing codes, ANSI standards, and other applicable standards and codes.
  • Municipal building zoning and related codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Inspection techniques and practices.
  • Occupation hazards and safety precautions applicable to the construction trades.
  • Engineering principles related to Building Codes.
Ability to:
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, and engineering drawings to compare to construction in progress.
  • Operate and enter information into a city computer and computer system.
  • Perform accurate plans review.
  • Communicate effectively with builders, contractors, and the general public in written and oral form.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or two (2) years of college coursework in a Building Inspection Technology Program or related trade/technical coursework AND
  • One (1) to four (4) years experience in one or more areas of building construction
Or any combination of three (3) to six (6) years of related education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions.
  • A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury.
  • Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.
  • Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one year period.
  • Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
