Golden Community Center's 4-star Qualistar rated preschool program is designed to foster intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth in each child through play and personal attention.

This position is responsible for the daily operation, curriculum, planning, and State Licensing Administration of Licensed community recreation programs offered by the Golden Parks and Recreation Department including Preschool and Day Camps. Responsible for the development, administration, and implementation of appropriate curriculum and activities. Time is allocated 60% to preschool and 40% to day camp activities.

Responsible for the Preschool curriculum development and implementation based on developmentally appropriate practices, Jefferson County Benchmarks, National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS) and guiding practices. Ensures that all training requirements for day camp and preschool staff are met in accordance with state licensing requirements.

Maintains and prepares staff files, child files, lesson plans/curriculums, learning assessments, safety, employee and parent information manuals. Sets appropriate child-to-staff ratios. Maintains well organized assessment plans and practices for teachers and program. Maintains program records and documents needed for licensing compliance.

Responsible for purchasing and maintaining a supply inventory adequate for planned activities.

Maintains cleanliness of facility and organization of materials and equipment in accordance with the Department of Human Services Division of Child Care requirements, Jefferson County Department of Health and Environment requirements and Golden Parks and Recreation Department policies. Prepares staff and program areas for annual health, fire, and licensing inspections.

Supervises, observes, records, and evaluates conferences and classroom management for the purpose of creating goals for each child. Communicates with parents to provide information about preschool activities and their children's successes and challenges. Provides parent/teacher conference with an appropriate evaluation tool.

Immediately reports all incidents, injuries, and/or unsafe conditions to the Recreation Supervisor – Programs.

Provides classroom management strategies and organization in compliance with the Department of Human Services Division of Child Care rules and regulations. Develops and implements behavior plans and identifies and schedules additional resources for individual assessments including mental health specialists, speech and language assessments, and other relevant services.

Communicates effectively with Recreation Supervisor – Programs in order to provide a quality program. Provides support in evaluating programs and initiating changes to creatively address the needs and wishes of the public. Supports the establishment of registration protocols.

Maintains a positive, safe, and nurturing physical and emotional environment in the program with parents, students, and staff. Implements nutrition goals during eating times and in nutrition education experiences.

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties associated with assigned programs such as answering the phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies as needed for activities, conducting classes, and helping set up for classes and events.

Provides classroom coverage as needed for breaks and missed shifts. This position may spend 15-25% of weekly time in the classroom for planning duties or coverage needs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Directly supervises the Licensed Childcare Assistant Director, Early Childhood Education Teachers, substitute teachers, preschool assistants, interns, Day Camp staff, and volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or Early Childhood Special Education. Upon hire, must successfully pass a TRAILS Background check, a CBI fingerprint criminal background check and must provide an Employment Health Form signed by a physician. Minimum 2 years’ director experience in a Large Childcare Center, 3 years’ experience preferred.

Must maintain a minimum of 15 annual hours of training in early childhood education. In addition to the annual ongoing training of 15 hours each year, directors of large full day childcare centers operating more than 6 hours a day must complete a 3 semester hour course every 5 years in a subject related to the operation of a childcare center.

Work to maintain standards set forth by the State of Colorado related to licensing requirements and standards associated with accreditation (See Attachments)

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Colorado driver’s license with a good driving record.

First Aid, CPR, Universal Precautions and Medication Administration certification required within 60 days of hire.

Preschool Director Credentials and qualifications for a large center. Current early childhood teaching license.

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

Demonstrates maturity of judgment and the skill to exercise appropriate supervision and direction to preschool and school age children in structured and unstructured settings.

Ability to facilitate resolution of conflicts. Ability to make sound decisions and use good judgment under stressful conditions. Makes independent decisions and has the ability to complete projects with minimal supervision. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and community organizations, the public, and participants. Ability to plan, assign, instruct, supervise, effectively schedule, and direct the work of subordinate personnel engaged in carrying out the functions of assigned section. Strong organizational skills with proven ability to multi-task.

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED 

Elementary school supplies (paper, crayons, paints, glue, and scissors). Computer, printer, copier, phone, and related office equipment necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. Specialized equipment related to assigned programs. Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; Internet use and Intranet use.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
