CITY OF GERMANTOWN is Hiring a Firefighter Paramedic Near Germantown, TN

The City of Germantown is looking for a qualified Firefighter/Paramedic with or without firefighter experience. Under supervision, respond to emergency incidents to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill or injured at the scene of the incident and during transport, until the patient is transferred to the care of other medical personnel. Perform all duties of a firefighter including fire suppression and rescue, salvage operation, and fire prevention and building inspection. Perform routine maintenance of equipment, general care of buildings and grounds, and maintain inventory supplies. Wear protective clothing and breathing devices and operate a variety of fire-fighting equipment such as hoses, extinguishers, ladders and axes. 

The candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Licensed as a Paramedic by the State of Tennessee or eligible for reciprocity in the State of Tennessee and can obtain State of Tennessee Paramedic licensure prior to employment. 
  • Firefighter experience is preferred but not required. Should the candidate not have firefighter experience, he or she must progress through the State of Tennessee Firefighter Certification Program (as specified in NFPA Standards 1001) as a condition of continued employment. 
Salary
Compensation for Fire department personnel follows a career development plan. New hires transferring from another Fire department or Medical Service may be eligible for higher starting pay based on previous service, experience and current certifications.Firefighter Paramedic:

  1. Performs emergency care and advanced life support functions along with fire prevention, fire suppression, public education, and rescue duties. Employee will be assigned, on a rotating basis, to fire apparatus and emergency transport ambulances.
  2. Participate in fire suppression and low to high angle rescue activities; operate pumps, aerial ladders and other auxiliary fire apparatus.
  3. Participate in engine and pumper hood-up at scene of fire; lay connector hose; hold nozzle and direct water stream to combat fire; raise and climb ladders; use chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, ropes and other equipment to suppress and extinguish fires.
  4. Perform salvage and overhaul operations, sweeping water, removing debris, and searching for extinguisher hidden fires.
  5. Maintain inventory of drugs, medications, and intravenous fluids.
  6. Maintain records; prepare medical and patient care reports, and other reports as required.
  7. Perform fire prevention inspections of buildings and contents to ensure compliance with appropriate fire codes. Provide fire prevention information to property owners and the general public, one-on-one and before groups.
  8. Participate in required drills, classes, continuing education events and activities as provided by the Department or as directed; provide training to others as required.
  9. Perform regular routine safety checks and maintenance of fire fighting tools, equipment and apparatus, and perform general maintenance work in the up-keep of fire department building and grounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:High School graduate or equivalent required. Firefighter experience preferred but not required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. Must possess a valid Class D driver's license with "F" Endorsement or equivalent. Must meet and maintain qualifications and training standards as established by the department
and the State of Tennessee. Must have a State of Tennessee license as a Paramedic and maintain re-certification as required or be eligible for reciprocity in the State of Tennessee as a licensed Paramedic and obtain State of Tennessee Paramedic licensure prior to employment.  Must progress through the State of Tennessee Firefighter Certification Program (as specified in NFPA Standards 1001) as a condition of continued employment. Firefighter experience is preferred but not required.

  • Professional emergency services training certificates issued by recognized training organizations (routine, recertification, and in-service training does not count).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Much of employee's time is spent at fire stations that have features common to a residential facility. When an alarm sounds, response must be rapid regardless of weather or hour. Work activities involve risk of death or injury from sudden cave-ins of floors, toppling walls, traffic accidents when responding to calls, and exposure to flames and smoke. Employees may come in contact with poisonous, flammable, or explosive gases and chemicals and contagious diseases. Employees must wear protective gear that can be very heavy and hot. Physical demands include carrying 80-100 lbs. of equipment; climbing many flights of stairs, ascending and descending on ground extensions ladders and fire escapes; and working at heights and in confined spaces to fight fires and rescue victims. The general work schedule requires 24-hour shifts, assigned on an alternating basis with either one or four days off between assignments. While on duty, employees live and sleep at the firestation.Qualified candidates will participate in a pre-employment screening process that will include a written knowledge exam, practical exercise exam, Oral Board Interview, Physical Abilities Test, Background Investigation, psychological exam, and a post-offer pre-employment Medical Exam and Drug Test.
