JOB DESCRIPTION:

The System Administrator (SA) reporting to the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) is responsible for the effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to COG values, enabling staff, volunteers, and citizenry. The system administrator will be responsible for installations, upgrades, and monitoring of software and hardware. They may also be involved in data backup and recovery. They usually maintain the essentials such as operating systems, business applications, security tools, web servers, email, PCs, local and wide area networking both hardware and software, and mid-range server hardware. COG System Administrator will be responsible for designing, organizing, modifying, and supporting the City of Gary's computer systems. Designs and installs LANs, WANs, Internet and intranet systems, and network segments.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support LANs, WANs, network segments, Internet, and Internet systems.
  • Ensure the design of the system allows all components to work properly together
  • Identify user needs and troubleshoot problems reported by users.
  • Make recommendations for future upgrades.
  • Maintain network and system security.
  • Monitor networks to ensure security and availability to specific users.
  • Evaluate and modify the system's performance.
  • Maintain the integrity of the network, server deployment, and security.
  • Ensure network connectivity throughout a company's LAN/WAN infrastructure is on par with technical considerations.
  • Design and deploy networks. Perform network address assignment.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • Assign routing protocols and routing table configuration.
  • Assign configuration of authentication and authorization of directory services.
  • Maintain network facilities in individual machines, such as drivers and settings of personal computers as well as printers. 
  • Maintain network servers such as file servers, VPN gateways, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Administer servers, desktop computers, printers, routers, switches, firewalls, phones, personal digital assistants, smartphones, software deployment, security updates, and patches. Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
  • Provide tier III/other support per request from various constituencies. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with the CIO.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Bachelor's (4-year) degree, with a technical major, such as Information Systems Technology or computer science. Systems Administration coursework in Unix and Microsoft systems. Two to three years of system administration experience is desired.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:

Functions as a lead worker, responsible for training, instruction, setting the work pace, and possibly evaluating performance. No budget responsibility.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

Interpret and/or discuss information with others, which involves terminology or concepts not familiar to many people; regularly provide advice and recommend actions involving rather complex issues. May resolve problems within established practices. Provides occasional guidance, some of which is technical.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice. No regular travel other than Citywide is required.
