Configures, installs, supports, and maintains the city-wide computer networks. Computer network(s) includes, but is not limited to, switches, fiber optic connectivity, wireless technologies, telephony equipment, and other devices connected to or inter-connecting the City network. Installs network equipment and software, supports the layer 3 network, and may assign and oversee network tasks of other IT staff. Also facilitates limited workstation support to include advanced configuration of systems, advanced installations, troubleshooting and user training/support.
Configures, installs, and maintains LAN/WAN hardware, software, and telecommunications services such as specific IT software, NextGen firewalls, wireless equipment, cameras, routers, switches, low voltage cabling, Internet connectivity, and other networking related technologies.
Performs network administration functions to include assessing and resolving problems arising from security, network hardware, network software, and workstation network connectivity.
Plan, engineer, and implement network design and infrastructure. This includes improving and optimizing current network infrastructure by replacing or upgrading devices in operation.Ensures the adherence to policies and best practices related to fault management/resolution of the city-wide network; including participation in disaster recovery procedures, and ongoing network management using diagnostic tools. May be assigned other key technologies as appropriate by leadership.
Identifies and reviews key baseline statistics for network monitoring. Analyzes network performance on a routine basis, identifying any potential problem areas. Resolves problems in an expeditious manor and makes recommendations for other changes as appropriate in a 24/7 operation.
Maintains networked systems diagrams and documentation for configuration management and audit purposes including, but not limited to procedures, hardware inventory and network infrastructure.
Role must be able to provide excellent customer service to both internal customers and external customers. Must ensure that appropriate status and detail updates are provided to stakeholders where needed.
Integrates with the Information Security team as needed for investigations and inquiries pertaining to infrastructure security and privacy
Provides limited workstation support on various system needs such as Microsoft® operating systems, network connectivity, PC hardware, business application software, Microsoft® Office products, and telephony equipment.
Provides user support, training and technical assistance.
Communicates and may negotiate contracts with outside vendors who specialize in cabling, networking, and telephone systems as requested by the CIO.
Performs on-call and after-hours duties as necessary as well as other related duties as required.
Education and Experience:
Associate degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering or other related field or equivalent professional experience
Three or more years of professional network engineering experience supporting full layer three (3) networking architectures. In-depth knowledge of advanced routing protocols highly desirable. CCNA certification (or equivalent) is preferred.
Equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above will be considered for the three years of related experience element listed above. The three (3) years of supporting a full layer 3 networking environment can not be substituted by formal education alone.
Licenses and Certifications:
CCNA certifications are highly desirable. NGFW certifications/training are also a plus.
Valid Class C Georgia Driver’s License and satisfactory motor vehicle record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of network management concepts and communications equipment including by not limited to layer 2 and 3 network technologies. Working knowledge of routing protocols and the ability to troubleshoot them.
Knowledge of personal computers and current operating systems.
Strong analytical skills.
Ability to exercise considerable judgment and ingenuity in resolving complex network and security issues.
Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
