HOURLY RATE: $16.50 - 24.00 per hour (based on relevant experience)

SUMMARY
Performs a variety of tasks to include supervision of the Pottery Studio, teaching classes, public relations, and the following duties that are performed in and around the Pottery Studio. This position has a set schedule and may potentially share responsibilities with a co-lead.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position but are not all inclusive of studio staff responsibilities.
  • Makes recommendations for scheduling and class contents.
  • Be present at the studio and assist with overseeing day to day operations of the studio which includes the processing of pottery works/pieces, communicating studio needs with coordinators, and supporting staff.
  • Schedules and trains volunteers.
  • Oversees the work study program.
  • Assists with staffing the studio which includes participation in parts of interviewing, onboarding, and training hourly instructors.
  • Assists with the supervision of studio staff in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable law which may include planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Clearly communicates studio supplies as needed and maintains both supplies and equipment inventories.
  • With the help of instructors, ensures the studio is a clean, safe environment for instructors and participants.
  • Helps prepare brochures, fliers, documents, tracking forms, and advertising information, including Recreator.
  • Works with pottery coordinator and other appropriate staff to schedule the facility and coordinate maintenance projects.
  • Performs studio organizational and maintenance tasks, including loading and unloading kilns.
  • Oversees glazes and glaze maintenance.
  • Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with all City staff and contractual employees.
  • Assists students with a wide variety of problems and questions.
  • Acts as substitute instructor in classes and labs as needed.
  • Additional projects as agreed upon.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has limited supervisory responsibilities over Pottery Studio employees and volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS
The experience listed below is representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the necessary functions of this position but is not all inclusive of studio staff responsibilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Requires knowledge of specific pottery areas and media, including policies, procedures, and equipment.
  • Ability to work well with the public.
  • Special knowledge of tools related to their specific areas of expertise such as kilns, scales, handcarts, compressors, shop vacuum, drills, saws, and many tools related to the pottery process.
  • Work independently without direct supervision.
  • Open and close a facility independently.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, participants, and the public.
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written form with external and internal customers.
  • Can Function as a pottery instructor and supports other instructors when needed.
  • Computer knowledge is a must, and the ability to operate a variety of office equipment.
  • Understand and apply department procedures and policies.
  • Handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy as a representative of the city.
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
High School graduation or GED or related vocational training required.
Graduation from a 4-year school with BA/ BFA/MA/ or MFA desirable.
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in teaching and Pottery Studio management is desirable.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read instructions and communicate with City Supervisors and general public. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisor, students, and the general public.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems, and interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
CPR/First Aid/AED certification required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Required to constantly stand, walk, sit, climb stairs/ladders, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and talk and hear. Frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, push, pull, crawl or withstand extended periods of standing or moving about. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to wet and /or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, extreme cold/heat, and vibration. The noise level is usually moderate and dusty conditions exist.

Performance Steps
Performance Step 1
  • Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Performs as required by job description with minimum responsibilities; completes work as scheduled and assigned.

Performance Step 2

  • Meets all qualifications outlined in Step 1 and has a favorable review from their supervisor.
  • At least two (2) years of formal experience in a specialized area (Studio management), including at least one (1) year of experience teaching pottery to others.
  • Performs as required by job description with minimum responsibilities; completes work as scheduled and assigned.

Performance Step 3

  • Meets all qualifications outlined in Step 2 and has a favorable review from their supervisor.
  • Meets at least 2 of the following qualifications:
  • At least three (3) years of formal experience teaching specialized area of instruction to others.
  • At least three (3) years of studio management experience.
  • Has completed a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours of college course work in specialized area of instruction.

Performance Step 4

  • Meets all qualifications outlined in Step 3 and has a favorable review from their supervisor.
  • Meets at least 2 of the following qualifications:
  • At least three (3) years of experience teaching creative arts programs for the City of Fort Collins Recreation Department.
  • At least four (4) years of studio management experience.
  • Maintains working knowledge of program area trends and informs the Recreation Coordinator of suggested changes or updates to class offerings.
  • Willing to fill in as needed, learn new tasks, and assume additional responsibilities.

Performance Step 5

  • Meets all qualifications outlined in Step 4 and has a favorable review from their supervisor.
  • Meets at least 2 of the following qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree or professional certification in specialized area of instruction.
  • At least five (5) years of studio management experience.
  • At least four (4) years of experience teaching creative arts programs for the City of Fort Collins Recreation Department.
  • Creates and implements new processes which increase studio efficiency.
Performance Step 6
  • Meets all qualifications outlined in Step 5 and has a favorable review from their supervisor.
  • Meets at least 2 of the following qualifications:
  • A master’s degree or advanced professional certification in specialized area of instruction.
  • At least five (5) years of experience teaching creative arts programs for the City of Fort Collins Recreation Department.
  • At least six (6) years of studio management experience.
  • Creates and implements new processes which increase studio efficiency.
  • Willing to fill in as needed, learn new tasks, and assume additional responsibilities.
