Actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values. Actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values Incumbent performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of city automotive equipment.
 
Under direct supervision of a Mechanic Leadworker, employees of this class perform equipment repair work on automobiles, trucks, snow removal equipment, light and heavy mechanized equipment, and other similar equipment. Employees work under general supervision and direction and are expected to exercise independent judgment as to the method of repair after receiving written or oral instructions concerning the operating condition of a piece of equipment. Work may be inspected or tested by the supervisor upon completion.

  • Compliance: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.
  • Council Communications: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Council's adopted priorities and direction.
  • Reporting: This job does not have duties related to reporting to Federal/State/Local agencies.
EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
 
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs all aspects of a wide variety of gasoline/diesel powered automotive equipment such as automobiles, light trucks and other gasoline/diesel powered specialized equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs new on-board computer systems and sub-systems relating to electrical, fuel supply systems, hydraulic systems, including master cylinder, and proportioning valves, engine cooling systems, including radiators, heater cores, and hoses, and comfort control systems, including heating and air conditioning.
  • May assist with heavy equipment repair or maintenance of a routine or well-prescribed nature, as assigned.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electronic fuel systems.
  • Replaces wheel cylinders and relines and adjusts brakes.
  • Performs lubrication and oil changes on light vehicles and equipment.
  • Installs auxiliary equipment, batteries, tires, wiring, delete, door handles, and brakes.
  • Maintain records of repairs made, work orders, and time worked.
  • Works in the field and in the shop as assigned.
  • Required to do tire repair work.
  • May be required to drive fuel and lubricant truck to various offsites.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Three years of experience as a professional mechanic.
  • Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • Trade school certificate relating to automotive mechanics.
  • ASE certification in gasoline engines and modules A1-A8.
  • ASE certified Master Automotive Technician.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver's license.
  • Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within (3) months of employment.
  • CDL Tanker and Hazmat endorsements must be obtained within three (3) months of employment or within three (3) months of meeting CDL eligibility requirements.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
  • All Emergency Service Employees shall maintain their principal residence within the state boundaries of Arizona. All Emergency Service Employees, except those holding a position in Fire, will arrive at the assigned or emergency work location within one (1) hour from notification to report to duty.
  • Incumbents of this position are subject to pre-employment drug screening, and post-employment random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must be able to furnish own hand tools for this position.
  • Must have the ability to be contacted and to respond in a timely manner and be willing and able to work 12-hour shifts during snow removal operations, including weekends and holidays, as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of automotive equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of the operation of internal combustion engines and tire repair.
  • Ability to conduct on-board computer diagnostics.
  • Working knowledge of using computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot vehicle problems.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical defects of a wide variety of gasoline powered equipment in all phases of automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment employed in all phases of automotive equipment and repair.
  • Ability to maintain time and materials records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger/handle/feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to climb or balance, stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl, and is occasionally required to sit, and taste or smell.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Working conditions include frequent exposure to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration; regular exposure to work in outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather); and occasional exposure to work in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work in high precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
