City of Fayetteville, Arkansas is Hiring a FIREFIGHTER (Candidate Pool) - 02119 Near Fayetteville, AR

Safety/Security Sensitive Designation:

This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.

  1. Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. 
  2. Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service including but not limited to, fire suppression, ventilation, salvage and overhaul, hazardous materials, emergency medical assistance, utilities, air supply, rehabilitation, exposure, water supply, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), and specialized rescue.
  3. Once certified, fill in as Driver/Operator when assigned.
  4. Assist with safety education for the community.
  5. Clean and maintain station and equipment.
  6. Participate in personal, company and department training.
  7. Regularly participate in either group or self-directed physical fitness activities.
  8. Assist with all inspections and testing that include but are not limited to pre-incident planning, building inspections, hydrant inspections, and hose and pump tests.
  9. Assist Driver/Operator with truck and equipment checks.
  10. Perform recordkeeping.
  11. May be assigned in the Operations or Training division.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

A Firefighter who meets the qualifications below may be assigned to fill the role of Driver/Operator. 

  1. Completion of one (1) year of service with the FFD and has successfully met all probationary requirements.
  2. Completion of FFD Backup Driver program and certification as a Backup Driver.
  3. Familiarity with buildings and streets in immediate coverage area and outlying areas of the City.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES When Assigned as Driver/Operator include the following:

  1. Safely deliver crew members and equipment to the scene of all types of emergencies – EMS, fire, hazardous materials, motor vehicle accidents, extrication, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), technical rescue, and aerial operations.
  2. Check all equipment. Perform minor maintenance on the apparatus and equipment and record any apparatus maintenance problems.
  3. Operate the pumps and deliver water supply, operate aerial devices, and other equipment at working fires.
  1. Secondary duties as assigned.
  1. Be a citizen of the United States or a nonimmigrant legally admitted to the United States under the Compact of Free Association (Marshall Islands), not less than 18 years of age. Applicants less than 21 years of age must possess one of the requirements listed in 1-5:
    1. Arkansas EMT certification or National Registry EMT certification
    2. Medical certification or license at a higher level (paramedic, nurse, etc.)
    3. 12 college credit hours 
    4. Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification through IFSAC or Pro-Board
    5. A minimum of two years’ honorable service in the US Armed Forces including National Guard.
  2. Ark. State Code provides that no person who has arrived at the age of thirty-five (35) shall be eligible for appointment to the Fire Department except where the applicant is already a paid firefighter. The maximum age of thirty-five (35) shall not apply to:
    1. Any person who has at least two (2) years of previous experience as a paid firefighter with another department and whose years of experience as a paid firefighter, when subtracted from the person’s age leaves a remainder of not more than thirty- two (32) years.
    2. A current or former service member of the regular or reserve component of the uniformed services of the United States as defined under 10 U.S.C. § 101 who is within three (3) years of separation or retirement from the regular or reserve component of the uniformed services of the United States.
  3. Must possess a high school diploma or GED. A transcript from an accredited institution documenting a minimum of twelve (12) hours of completed college coursework with at least a “C” average may substitute for a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  4. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  5. Must successfully pass post offer testing including criminal background check, drug screen, physical examination and psychological evaluation.
  6. If not already certified, must obtain Firefighter I, Firefighter II and EMT certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
  7. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and written often under adverse conditions; possess good judgment; good powers of observation and memory.
  8. Ability to react quickly and effectively in all emergencies, natural or man-caused disasters.
  9. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the general public. 
  10. Must be proficient in the operation and use of all vehicles and equipment.
  11. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff.
  12. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  13. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is exposed to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire, hazardous materials, special rescue scene situations and emergency medical incidents. The noise level in the working environment is frequently loud. Mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to highly active states.
