City of Evanston is Hiring a Seasonal Laborer Near Evanston, IL
Nature Of WorkAssists departmental field employees with duties and responsibilities associated with daily job assignments including, but not limited to, park maintenance, facility maintenance, forestry maintenance, road maintenance, and refuse elimination. Provides assistance and resources to employees, managers, and the general public regarding programs within the City of Evanston.
Specifications: This position works 20 – 40 hours per week typically between the hours of 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM; Monday-Friday. Some positions will be scheduled to work evening and weekend hours. This position will report directly to the assigned crew leader, manager, supervisor with the support of staff within the Department. Employment will last no longer than 6 months not to exceed 1,000 hours for the year.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):
Public Works Maintenance Uses power and/or hand tools to perform mowing, watering, edging, raking and blowing leaves; pulls weeds; plants shrubs and perennials; and mulches plants; removes graffiti in parks; may assist in athletic field maintenance; may assist in the painting of picnic tables, park benches, etc.; posts picnic notifications and prepares sites for scheduled activities and all other duties as assigned. Assist with solid waste collection using hydraulically controlled tippers; pavement maintenance & repair; landscaping maintenance& litter control; and tree removal and maintenance.
Minimum Requirements Of Work
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability and experience to operate hand and power tools and equipment safely.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, other employees, and the public.
- Excellent oral communication and ability to be a fast learner.
SupervisionWork is performed under general supervision of a supervising crew leader. Initially employee receives instruction on the safe use of equipment in the performance of maintenance tasks, orientation to the department and work rules. Once proficiency with the variety of tasks performed and equipment used is gained, the employee is usually responsible for performing and completing the work independently according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is checked by supervisor on a daily basis, or at the completion of the assigned project. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, personnel rules and OSHA.
Public ContactThe employee has regular contact with the general public when working his/her normal shift. They may be asked to field questions and respond to concerns. The employee has contact with other City employees to relay factual and specific information regarding work assignments.
