NATURE OF WORK: Under the general direction of the Public Health Preparedness Specialist, this person will assist with training Health and Human Services Staff, volunteers and other health professionals in the development of emergency preparedness plans. *Note, the duration of the position is 12 weeks* ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assist in the training and planning of mass notification call-down drills and public health exercises; including tabletop, functional, and full scale exercises with a focus on Medical Countermeasure Dispensing and Administration.
Assist in the execution of deliverables for Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) and Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) Grants.
Assist in structuring, organization and strategic planning for MRC Volunteer Program including areas of on-boarding, volunteer activation, training opportunities, and engagement during post deployment.
Categorize, structure and maintain MRC roster using the online volunteer management systems – Better Impacts and IL HELPS.
Attend the NIPHC Emergency Response Coordinator Meeting and Region X Healthcare Coalition Meeting, as scheduled.
Occasionally assist in inspections for environmental health programs including food facilities, food-borne illness investigations, vector control, public health nuisances, lead risk assessment, apiary sites, and/or other possible environmental risk factors.
Participate in discussions with the communicable disease team on the investigation of disease outbreaks, surveillance, and reporting.
Participate in discussions and occasional site visits with community health educators on Project for the Local Assessment of Needs (EPLAN).
Assist other related public health and preparedness duties assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Must be a City of Evanston resident
Genuine interest in public health promotion and volunteer engagement in the community.
Must be skilled in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and following up assignments with a minimum of direction.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google G Suite.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
Excellent facilitation/training, written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent planning and organizational skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff as well as the City of Evanston as a whole, including external partner organizations and vendors, leaders of professional associations and health care membership organizations, schools of public health, state and local health departments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Able to exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently
Physical demands will also include the ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, handle, finger, and feel objects.
Environmental Conditions: The worker is subject to internal and external environmental conditions – being outside, travel to and from governmental facilities, public training, and being involved in emergency response.
Completion of necessary training prerequisites during the first week of employment; including, but not limited to National Incident Management System (NIMS) training.
Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
Able to occasionally attend regional meetings in Cook, Dupage or Lake County.
SUPERVISION The intern will be directed under the supervision of the Public Health Preparedness Specialist.
