In these temporary roles, you will support the OECE staff on equity and community engagement projects affecting our community. You will collaborate with OECE staff, and sometimes other City staff, to achieve equity and community engagement project goals. This often includes the engagement of underrepresented communities such as BIPOC, LGBTQ , people with disabilities, and religious minorities, but can also include the general population.
Projects you may work on can come from any City department or division and can range in topic, and all focus on infusing equity and community engagement within allotted budgets. Some past and current projects include Parks & Recreation Systems Update, Community Safety Initiative, Digital Equity, Police Policy Reform, Sustainability Innovation, Intergovernmental Tribal Relations, Hazard Mitigation Plan Update, Climate Friendly & Equitable Communities, Neighborhood Planning, Hate & Bias Prevention and Response, and Parks & Recreation Health Equity Initiative. Most projects will include aspects of community engagement where your skills can be complemented by your lived experience, community connections, and languages spoken.

Temporary Program Assistant

Requires at least six months recent professional related experience, or one year related responsible paraprofessional experience.
Requires equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in areas such as public administration, equity application, planning, law, social work, psychology, education, conflict resolution, or in a related field.
Hourly Pay Range: $24.50 - $44.10
Temporary Professional 2

Supervision: Work is performed independently and requires significant independent judgement and discretion.

Requires at least two years of professional experience in program administration, preferably in the public sector. Some supervisory experience preferred.
Requires the equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in areas such as public administration, equity application, planning, law, social work, psychology, education, conflict resolution, or in a related field.
The ideal candidate may be one who comes with relevant transferrable skills from a variety of sources and experiences. We will consider any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications and demonstrate the abilities required to perform the job. All skills will be assessed based on the applicable classification/level of temporary employment above.
In addition to the minimum experience and qualifications outlined above, the ideal candidates will have the following knowledge, skills, abilities:
Experienced: You may have developed and applied the skills necessary for this position by working at a non-profit, a government agency, an educational institution, doing community organizing or volunteer work.
Educated: You possess the right amount of experience, training coursework or degree in public administration, equity application, planning, law, social work, psychology, education, conflict resolution, or in a related field. You have the right amount of understanding and ability to implement the concepts of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to work. Relevant professional level experience may be substituted for educational requirements on a year for year basis.
Experienced in community engagement: You have the right amount of experience in supporting, designing and leading community engagement processes; coordinating with city staff and community members to establish common goals, working agreements, and project timelines for successful engagement processes.
A collaborator: You know how to work well with individuals and groups that may be different from you. You can work collectively to identify opportunities and unintended consequences of policies and projects you are working on. You seek to communicate constructively and reflect on how to improve your own communication. You know how to present criticism in a way that empowers people and moves the work towards desired outcomes.
You cultivate self-awareness and emotional intelligence: You recognize and understand your emotions and the emotions of others, and you use this understanding to manage your behavior and relationships. You recognize your individual strengths and weaknesses and work on your weaknesses so that you can perform better individually and as part of a team. You are open to and accepting of other people’s perspectives and needs and you practice humility by giving others a chance to shine.
Speaking another language, particularly Spanish and Chinese, is also helpful and should be highlighted in your application.
Additional skills and/or experience applicable to Professional 2 and 3 levels:
A great facilitator: You possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. You have the right amount of experience facilitating group processes.
Experienced in policy analysis: You can analyze existing and proposed policies to identify unintended consequences or barriers with disparate impacts on marginalized communities.
