City of Elyria is Hiring a Residential Construction and Housing Inspector Near Elyria, OH

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

1. Reviews plans and specifications related to one (I), two (2) and three (3) family residential structures and accessory buildings in order to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and regulations.

2. Performs field inspections of residential construction and/or remodeling projects in order to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations advises contractors and building owners of violations and ensures corrective action.

3. Performs field inspections and enforces City housing and zoning codes and regulations, advises property owner or occupant of violations and ensures corrective action.

4. Prepare and maintains inspection related records, reports, and other documentation.

5. Must be able to communicate satisfactorily with other employees and the general public

6. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

7. Performs systematic and complaint-related inspections of residential structures according to City building and public nuisance codes; prepares reports and legal orders, may perform exterior inspections of other build/property according to City building and public nuisance codes.

8. Maintains required licensure and certification.

9. Assists with completion of routine office tasks such as filing and retrieving of job related documents.

10. Performs other related duties.

11. Must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.

12. Must be able to perform heavy manual labor, which includes lifting, reaching, stretching, and bending.

13. Must have and continually maintain a working telephone (proof will be required and records must be kept up to date).

14. Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Working experience with residential construction inspection.

2. Must possess a current State of Ohio Residential Building Inspector License.

3. Possession of a valid Ohio driver’s license; plus must be able to qualify for and remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.

4. The candidate must also have working knowledge of: Ohio Basic Building Code; local zoning/housing codes; code enforcement procedures; rehabilitation standards; processing of rehabilitation cases; legal/court process as it relates to code enforcement; safety practices and procedures; state and local laws and/or regulations; department policies and procedures*.

5. You will need to have the ability to: interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving several variables within familiar context; compile information for and prepare reports; understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations; prepare accurate documentation; communicate effectively; develop and maintain effective working relationships; perform light manual labor; travel to and gain access to work site. Building, zoning, and public nuisance codes; inspection techniques; code enforcement procedures; government structure and process; rehabilitation standards; processing rehabilitation cases; legal/court process as it relates to code enforcement.

6. Also have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations; compile and prepare reports; communicate effectively; develop and maintain effective working relationships; travel to and gain access to work site; operate a personal computer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of safety procedures associated with maintenance work; knowledge of and ability to use basic tools and equipment common to cemetery maintenance work after proper training; ability to follow written and oral instructions.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Automobile, step ladder, and standard office equipment (copy machine, fax machine, telephone) personal computer, and inspection tools.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORK CONDITIONS:

The employee: conducts inspection in and around construction sites and equipment; climbs ladders and walks on scaffolding; is exposed to construction, power, and mechanical tools and equipment; is exposed to dust, dirt, fumes, and noise; is occasionally exposed to adverse weather conditions.

Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
