Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree or higher, in Planning, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field and four (4) years of work experience in planning, environmental services, energy, or climate change.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by time of appointment.
Provide technical expertise and support for the Water Utility’s various climate and sustainability programs, projects, and policy issues ensuring alignment with the Region and the City’s Climate Action Plans.
Support the implementation of the Region and City’s Climate Action Plans. Involves: Participate in the development and coordination of the Utility’s local sustainability strategies, working closely with Utility staff and management in a variety of roles around all aspects of climate and sustainability implementation. Develop mechanisms to ensure that the Utility’s team is fully engaged in implementation of sustainability strategies and that their programs are fully aligned with those strategies. Ensure the implementation of the Utility’s sustainability strategies aligns with Regional and City strategies, regional initiatives, and the community at large.
Develop baseline assessments of sustainability policies and practices. Involves: Monitor and track progress in achieving climate change and sustainability strategies. Provide recommendations for policy and program improvements. Provide climate and sustainability expertise, acting as a technical resource for Utility staff and providing input on climate and sustainability-related topics for Utility plans, programs, and initiatives. Research and complete grant applications for funding related to climate action projects.
Develop and coordinate collaborative partnerships with government, non-profit and community groups in support of sustainable initiatives. Involves: Assess internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and develop outreach strategies to engage staff and the public in participating in sustainability strategy updates and implementation. Educate staff and community members regarding the design, implementation, and process changes related to climate change and sustainability. Plan and organize community events, conduct outreach to residents, schools, and businesses and coordinate educational programs and materials. Develop staff reports and presentations regarding findings, program recommendations and program accomplishments, as needed. Attend various meetings, committees, and conferences related to program goals and objectives, and represents the Utility on sustainable and environmental interests at local, regional, and state levels.
Optimize efficiency and effectiveness of research activities in support of sustainable initiatives. Involves: Conduct literature reviews to stay informed of relevant research developments, identifying gaps in existing knowledge, and contributing to the design of new research projects that align with sustainable practices. Oversee the planning and coordination of research projects to include development and implementation of project plans, ensuring clarity of objectives, timelines, and milestones. Serves as primary contact for research partners, including universities and companies, exploring new technologies. Ensure seamless collaboration among team members and external stakeholders, with a specific focus on sustainability and natural resource management. Facilitate effective communication and collaboration through regular meetings and progress updates among team members, stakeholders, and external partners. Disseminate research results by presenting findings internally and articulating to external stakeholders how results align with and advance the utility’s commitment to sustainability and natural resource management.
