City of El Cerrito is Hiring a SWIM COACH (AQUATICS SPECIALIST I/PART-TIME) Near El Cerrito, CA

THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITION
The Recreation Department manages a full range of recreational and special activities for youth, adults and seniors. The department also schedules activities and rentals of buildings, picnic areas, sports fields and tennis courts. 
Essential responsibilities and duties depend on assignment and may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
  • Proficient knowledge and experience with proper aquatic exercise techniques, competitive stroke mechanics, and safety skills.
  • Effectively instruct and lead aquatic fitness classes, swim team programs to varying age groups.
  • Responsible for choreographing, goal setting, and leading water fitness classes and/or swim team workouts.
  • Coordinate programs, pool space and time as needed with Aquatics Management.
  • Evaluate each student to ensure that the properly performing exercises and swimming strokes in a manner that is safe for him/her.
  • Attend continuing education workshops, maintain certification, and maintain working knowledge of industry standards, rules, and regulations.
  • Motivate, teach, and attract new membership to the program.
  • Perform administrative duties related to running instructional classes and/or a swim team.
  • Prepare updates/newsletters for class participants and team members informing them of schedule modifications, swim meets and special events.
  • Responds to emergency situations as required including performing CPR and first aid as needed.
  • Assist Assistant Aquatics Supervisor with maintaining up-to-date program information and promotion of City of El Cerrito aquatics programming.
  • Performs technical work pertaining to the operation and maintenance of specialized aquatics equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 Knowledge of:
  • Swimming strokes progression, techniques, and teaching methods.
  • Principles, practices, and procedures relating to operations and emergency response at an aquatic facility.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Safety Training for Swim Coaches.
  • Modern office practices and procedures, including operation of computer equipment and related software.
  • Basic information specific to assigned program activities and functions including principles and techniques of Water Safety Instructor training.
  • Experience with competitive swimming and water fitness techniques including organization and design of workouts.
  • USA Swimming rules and regulations and standard practices from a nationally recognized organization for water exercise programs.
 
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively both written and orally.
  • Effectively communicate program and schedule information to customers.
  • Instruct, evaluate, and provide feedback of swimming strokes.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including a culturally diverse public, with a focus on quality service to internal and external customers.
  • Understand and act in accordance with departmental policies, rules, instructions, and written material in the field of aquatics.
  • Apply swim stroke teaching progression techniques.
  • Analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Design, choreograph, and deliver water fitness workouts.
  • Provide instruction, feedback, and evaluation to program participants.
  • Answer telephone, respond to email, perform data entry, and use office equipment.
Experience:
Eighteen years (18) of age or older and one or more years teaching experience in an aquatic facility.
 
Training:
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certificate from the American Red Cross or equivalent organization.
  • Certification from a nationally recognized water exercise or competitive swimming organization such as Aquatic Exercise Association, USA Swimming, or equivalent.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and/or Water Safety Instructor Training is highly desirable.
 
Licenses/Certificates/ Other Requirements:
Aquatics Specialists are required to wear uniforms and may be required to work unusual hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Individuals chosen for hire must be able to pass continuous skill audits. Aquatics Specialists must maintain current certifications and must participate in a minimum of 16 hours of formal rescue skills training per season.OTHER REQUIREMENTS
