The Opportunity: 
The City of El Cajon is currently searching for a leader to join our Public Works Department Field Maintenance Operations Division. This position is responsible for directing the operations of four key maintenance divisions of Public Works field operations: Facilities, Fleet, Streets/Parks, and Wastewater/Stormwater, including 50-55 employees. The ideal candidate will demonstrate confidence, initiative, professionalism, and political acumen.The Position: The Deputy Director of Public Works Field Maintenance Operations plans, organizes, and directs a significant division of the Public Works Department in connection with the operations and maintenance of municipal public works; administers contracts for public works construction and maintenance; assists with the department's review of proposed developments and their impact to existing infrastructure; and performs related work as required. May serve as the acting Director in the absence of the Director and the City Engineer/Deputy Director of Public Works.

  • Directs work necessary to operate, maintain, and extend the service life of city-owned facilities, grounds, fleet, streets, parks, sewers, storm drains, and related infrastructure.
  • Ensures a high level of contract service and customer participation in the City’s Solid Waste and Recycling Program.
  • Assists the Director in formulating and achieving strategic goals for the Public Works department.
  • Evaluates employee performance.
  • Resolves complex and sensitive inquiries and complaints.
  • Represents the City at community and professional meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Evaluates the operations and programs of assigned division and formulates short and long-range plans to provide appropriate service levels.
  • Coordinates division activities with other City departments and other public and private agencies as needed.
  • Prepares and administers division budget.
  • Represents the City in regional working groups related to wastewater, storm water, and other regional infrastructure needs.
  • Serves as acting Public Works Director when designated.
Experience: At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in the operations, repair, and maintenance of public works facilities, including at least five years of experience at the managerial and supervisory levels.
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, construction technology, or a related field is desirable. Graduate study in civil engineering or public administration is desirable.
License or Certification: Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid class C California driver's license with a safe driving record.
