Description
The City of Edgewater is seeking a sport loving, part-time Referee to work at our Sunday Adult Basketball League. Edgewater is a city of approximately 5,000 residents nestled between the cities of Denver, Wheat Ridge, and Lakewood. The primary responsibility of the Referee is to officiate our adult basketball leagues. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent customer service to residents and visitors. Referees will work 3-5 hours per week, depending on the current season. Candidates with flexible schedules are desired as the workflow varies to provide proper coverage and meet business needs.
· Officiate adult sporting events, games, or competitions, to maintain standards of play and ensure that game rules are observed.
· Signal participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition.
· Communicate effectively and efficiently with Programs Coordinator and Program Specialist.
· Maintain a safe environment for program participants.
· Keep track of event times and elapsed times during game segments, starting or stopping play when necessary.
· Familiarize yourself with the City of Edgewater Rule Book.
· Teach and explain the rules and regulations to parents and participants in the specific sport.
· Direct participants to assigned areas.
· Assist with set-up and break down of various equipment.
· Maintains a positive attitude, takes initiative, and works as a cohesive team with all staff members to ensure efficiency and camaraderie.
· Responds to accidents or incidents according to procedures. Effectively handles emergency situations involving fire alarms, CPR and First Aid.
· Upholds City and Department policies and procedures as well as applicable laws.
· Participates in staff meetings and ongoing training opportunities.
· Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
· Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Programs Coordinator.
Requirements
1) Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.
2) Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record.
3) Submit and pass a pre-employment background check.
4) Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
· Basic verbal and written English language skills and grammar to reasonably communicate information with the public and/or complete relevant written documentation required by job activities.
· Spanish language skills preferred.
· Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills.
· The ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
· Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
· Experience officiating adult sports, primarily basketball, preferred.
· Understanding of a variety of sports and associated rules, preferred.
· Use of whistle.
· Ability to stand, walk, and jog for 45-60 minute increments.
· Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communication skills, to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, appointing authorities, department heads, appointed boards, employees, and volunteers.
· Ability to work independently.
