This is a non-supervisory position responsible for the enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances dealing with sanitation-related occurrences and nuisances.
Enforces municipal ordinances and codes relating to sanitation, animal control, nuisance odors, illegal dumping of waste, and other regulations pertaining to the disposal of regulated refuse of any kind;
Writes and delivers explanations to offenders regarding the nature of the offense, and levies fines as prescribed by regulation;
Educates the public and conducts awareness programs on regulations regarding sanitation-related occurrences and nuisances;
Performs other related duties as required.
High School diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree or college coursework in related field preferred; four (4) years of progressively responsible related experience; valid State of Georgia Driver's License; equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of City ordinances, codes and regulations pertaining to issues of sanitation, animal control, public nuisances and their abatements, illegal dumping of trash or other refuse, and other abandoned items;
Practical knowledge of the practices and procedures relating to the identification and removal of abandoned items or other refuse;
Ability to explain complex regulator material to the general public;
Ability to testify in a clear and concise manner before a court;
Ability to understand both written and oral instructions;
Ability to deal with the general public in mildly hostile and unstructured settings;
Ability to write clearly and explain, both orally and in writing, complex regulatory provisions.
Supervisory Controls: This position is under the direct supervision of the Sanitation Officer.
Guidelines: Guidelines include City codes and ordinances and State and Federal laws and regulations. Guidelines are sometimes clear and specific, but are often subject to interpretation.
Complexity: This is a non-supervisory position that is responsible for maintaining optimal public health conditions of citizens.
Scope and Effect: The role of the position is to ensure that citizens comply with the City's ordinances in the area of sanitation.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are with other City departments, co-workers, contractors, builders and the general public. City of East Point Class Specifications
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are to give or exchange information, resolve problems and negotiate or settle matters.
Physical Demands: This position may require standing, walking, sitting, lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, speaking, hearing and seeing.
Work Environment: The work is performed outdoors in sometimes extreme weather conditions near dangerous machinery, with possible exposure to harmful fumes or chemicals.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility: None.
