Performs a variety of activities relating to investigation and inspection of residential structures and vacant lands to determine compliance with the Housing Code, including the minimum housing standards, litter, nuisance and zoning ordinances, maintaining records and preparing reports on projects inspected, and performing a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Requires consistent interaction with the public. Enforcement actions required and include issuing tickets and appearing in court as a witness.
Union Affiliation: Michigan Assn. of Public Employees (MAPE) position.
REQUIRED:
o Equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by specialized knowledge of building construction, inspection services, construction codes, including structure and electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
o Minimum of one year’s work experience dealing directly with the general public.
o Must possess an unrestricted Michigan driver’s license and excellent driving record; use of personal vehicle required.
PREFERRED:
o Experience in inspection work, including structural codes and city ordinances, desirable.
o Computer data entry skills.
o International Code Council certifications (property maintenance code, residential code, or related).
This position may be exposed to construction site environments in possible inclement weather conditions. May be exposed to properties without air conditioning. To perform the essential functions of the job, an individual must be able to frequently move between inspection sites and position self as needed to complete inspections. May be required to occasionally inspect in confined spaces and stay in one place for prolonged periods of time. May occasionally be required to move up to 50lbs. Must be able to operate assigned office equipment.
