About the Utility Operations Division
The Utility Operations Division is responsible for operating, maintaining, and improving the water, natural gas, sanitary sewer, and stormwater systems in Duluth. These four utilities consist of nearly 2,000 miles of mains with the city of Duluth. Utility Operations staff work continuously to ensure that the systems are functioning properly. When repairs are needed, they are prioritized to ensure that safe and reliable utility service is provided. Utility Operations purchases natural gas from the wholesale market for residential, commercial, and industrial use. The Division also manages the Water Treatment Plant to produce drinking water for use in Duluth and surrounding communities.
Utility Maintenance Laborer temporary employees assist in repair, cleaning, and maintenance in the sanitary sewer, stormwater, water, and gas utilities.
Work Schedule: 40 hours/week; Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Pay Rate: $20.00/hour (requires a driver's license)
Anticipated Term: May or June 2024 start with a maximum of 67 working days
1. Operate and perform routine checks on vehicles and equipment.
2. Perform routine vehicle equipment maintenance as required.
3. Prepare and assist in operation of equipment used in sewer line maintenance, including high-pressure jet rodder, mechanical rodder, and bucket cleaning machines.
4. Prepare work sites with proper barricades, warning devices, and traffic control techniques.
5. Assist Lift Station Operators in maintenance to lift stations.
6. Assist in the installation and rehabilitation of sewers, culverts, catchbasins, and manholes.
7. Prepare work sites by breaking street surfaces, and assisting in the excavation of materials and in shoring operations.
8. Assist in the restoration of excavation sites including patching streets, pouring sidewalks, landscaping, and sodding.
9. Assist in water main and hydrant repair and maintenance.
10. Remove debris and obstructions in creeks.
11. Perform related work as assigned.
Age RequirementA. Must be age 18 or older.
License Requirement A. Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota driver's license or equivalent.
