City of Dubuque is Hiring an Engineering Intern (Traffic Engineer) Near Dubuque, IA

Work is full­time during the summer and part time during school. Normal hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with some flexible scheduling available. Overtime work hours may extend to 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Part-time work hours are approximately 10 hours per week during fall and spring semesters, full­time during winter break. Returning for subsequent summers may be an option.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The traffic engineering intern will assist with traffic operations activities throughout the city along with the coordination of capital improvement projects under the control of the Project Engineer. This position involves working on all aspects of project construction which includes construction observation, testing and record keeping for traffic signals, street lighting, traffic cameras and miscellaneous Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) communication projects throughout the city, fiber design and inspection, traffic signage and site visibility analysis, and traffic data collection. A portion of the work also requires regular communication between the various construction contractors and utility stakeholder coordination; and perform other duties as assigned.
Project assignments vary in size and scope and include working on projects that are in either the planning, design, or construction phase. Aspects of work include project design, construction administration, construction observation, construction inspection, and record keeping; and require regular communication between various design consultants, construction contractors, state and federal agencies, and utility stakeholders. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences and results achieved.

  • Observation of traffic signal operation, configuring/updating ITS software and firmware
  • Traffic camera footage exporting and analysis.
  • Field verification/analysis of signage, pavement markings, and site visibility requests
  • Data collection for traffic requests and studies.
  • Project design assistance and quantity estimating. This may include the use of Computer Assisted Design (CAD)
  • Review construction bid documents and contracts.
  • Use Geographic Information System (GIS) for engineering investigations.
  • Assist in project implementation; in solving projects management issues; in design and construction coordination; and with non-infrastructure project-related assignments.
  • Create project specifications and technical reports.
  • Inspect construction sites to determine if they meet specifications or standards.
  • Measuring and recording project quantities for payment.
  • Recommend technical design or process changes to improve quality of capital projects.
  • Develop technical methods or processes.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Engineering and Design - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Construction - Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction of underground utilities and traffic signals.
  • Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of accurate technical plans, drawings, and models, which includes the use of CAD and GIS.

  • Systems Evaluation - Measuring how well a system is working and how to improve it.

  • College student enrolled in Civil Engineering or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Sophomore or higher-level college student enrolled in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Experience working in civil engineering, traffic engineering, construction management, computer or software engineering and/or related courses.
  • General electrical, fiber optic and computer networking knowledge would be beneficial.
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and automobile insurance coverage consistent with the City’s requirements.
