JOB DESCRIPTION

Public Works Laborer

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The position of laborer performs a wide range of repair, construction, and public works maintenance activities requiring the operation of various types of light equipment and hand tools.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Public Works Laborer position requires a skilled individual with experience in operating equipment such as a snowplow, dump truck, lawnmower, weed eater, chainsaw, etc. The ideal candidate should possess a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. Additionally, familiarity with general maintenance tasks and equipment operation is essential for success in this role. The Laborer will report to the Public Works Supervisor and will assist in the upkeep and functionality of the city properties and streets. The City of Dixon expects the Laborer to perform routine maintenance tasks, respond promptly to repair requests, and contribute to a safe and well-maintained environment for all occupants.

This position will assist the Public Works team with the following tasks:

  • Routinely check water and sewer mains; repair sewer lines and broken water mains; tap water mains for services; and install new water mains.
  • Read meters and report to City Collector for monthly billing.
  • Clean sewer lines using sewer jet and rodding equipment. Clean, repair and inspect sewer lift stations. Troubleshoot, replace and read water meters.
  • Perform concrete finishing, pavement repair and landscape finishing tasks on utility excavation sites.
  • Perform minor repairs and report issues for larger repairs.
  • Respond to emergencies and calls for service both during and after hours including sanitary sewer calls, lift station problems, water main breaks, system leaks, etc. (After hour calls are part of a rotating on-call system.)
  • Sweeps city streets, paints curbs, stripes parking spaces and crosswalks, hauls replacement gravel for streets and city parking lots.
  • Removes snow from city streets, sidewalks, and parking lots.

JOB CONTEXT:

The laborer is a full-time, permanent position that works under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor. This position works regular hours, with occasional overtime due to water leaks and snow removal. The laborer does not exercise direct supervision.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • General knowledge of OSHA safety rules and regulations.
  • Comply with the company’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate light equipment utilized by the City.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the general public.
  • Hand and foot coordination.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong critical thinking ability.
  • Ability to make decisions that prevent accidents and damage to property.
  • Physical ability to work a strenuous work environment with manual labor tasks and strength to operate small equipment.
  • Decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a random drug test.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Valid Driver’s License (required)

CDL Class B (preferred)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School or equivalent (required)

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk and listen; stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or operate objects, tools, and controls; and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl. This position requires the ability to lift/carry/pull at least 50 lbs. frequently, 50 – 100 lbs. occasionally, and over 100 lbs. seldom. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $13.00 - $16.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
