The purpose of this position is to offer a graduate level student with Texas Tech University Institute of Forensic Science (IFS) the opportunity to train and learn about Forensic Firearm Examination and Criminal Investigation with the City of DeSoto Police Department.
 During the internship, students will learn skills such as forensic report writing, forensic firearm examination, and problem solving. The student will learn how to incorporate theoretical forensic principles into applicable results driven techniques. This is accomplished by: attending classes, observing criminal investigations, practical exercises, and application of theory in conducting analysis of Fired Cartridge Casings. This is an entry level position designed for individuals seeking a career in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Investigator, Crime Scene Technician, and/or Law Enforcement. 

• Performs assigned duties necessary to participate in training opportunities through field and classwork;
• Compiles and analyze gunshot detection data through ShotSpotter;
• Performs filing, typing, records retention; copying; compiling research and/or data collection and entry; scanning; report writing;
• Assists with writing detailed reports of forensic analysis;
• Conducts analysis of Fired Cartridge Casings utilizing Ballistic IQ;
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Must be a graduate level student
• Must be currently enrolled in Texas Technical University Institute of Forensic Science;

• Knowledge of City policies and procedures;
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite;
• Knowledge in forensic firearm examination and basic forensic science principles;
• Knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedures, police methods and procedures, interviewing techniques and administrative functions;
• Possess excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Ability to present oneself in a professional manner and maintain working relationships with City administration, Public Officials, other employees, and the general public.
