City of Denton is Hiring a Student Aide - Summer Youth Jobs Program Near Denton, TX

Responsible for providing direct support to internal and external customers in a variety of City of Denton departments.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DUTIES
  • Perform office duties including but not limited to, answering phone calls, greeting customers, filing, answering questions, appropriately directing internal and external customers, and completing paperwork.
ANIMAL SERVICES 
  • Provide animal enrichment by walking dogs and socializing with cats.
  • Assist with maintenance of the kennel area, including but not limited to, laundry, dish washing, and sanitation of kennels. 
PARKS & RECREATION
  • Greet and inform guests of facility policies and general information, as needed. 
  • Clean the workstation and surrounding areas.
  • Assist with stocking supplies and daily operations of recreation facility or summer camps.
  • Make guest service and satisfaction a priority. 
VARIOUS OFFICE SETTINGS
  • Assist special projects and prepares materials for meetings.
  • Review presentation materials.
  • Coordinate meetings and take minutes.
  • Assist with data entry and records retention.

  • Knowledge of City of Denton policies and procedures. 
  • Skill in performing mathematical and statistical calculations with accuracy. 
  • Skill at the high school level, in reading, writing, speaking, and interpersonal communications, including principles of English and grammar usage.
  • Skill at the basic level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work. 
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers. 
  • Skill in active listening; giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points communicated, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and in written forms, and listen intently to other points of view.

  • Ability to present a professional appearance. 
  • Ability to develop, understand, interpret, and apply rules, policies, and procedures operations. 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must be a resident of the City of Denton. 
  • Must be between the ages of sixteen (16) and twenty-one (21) years of age. 
  • Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check and social security number verification.
  • If Animal Services and Parks & Recreation, must pass physical examination. 
SAFETY 
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 
  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): No.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: 
    • If Office, standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals. 
    • If Animal Services, equipment use includes dishwasher, commercial laundry machines, waste scoop, water hose, dog bath station and dog leash.
    • If Parks & Recreation, equipment use includes art supplies, outdoor gear, recreational and sports equipment, including but not limited to, tables, chairs, coolers, games, and inflatables.
  • Posture: 
    • If Office, prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
    • If Animal Services and Parks & Recreation, prolonged sitting and standing; frequent stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting: 
    • If Office, lifting no more than 10 pounds.
    • If Animal Services and Parks & Recreation, occasional heavy lifting no more than 50 pounds and carrying up to 25 pounds.
  • Environment: 
    • If Office, works in an office setting and public environment. 
    • If Animal Services, works inside and outside in the animal shelter with and around animals (including diseased, injured and/or potentially aggressive animals) and public environment with exposure to sun, heat, cold, loud noises, chlorine, odor, or other chemicals.
    • If Parks & Recreation, works inside and outside with exposure to inclement weather, noise, debris, odor, and chemicals. 
  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. 
    • Must be able to work Monday – Friday, 20 to 30 hours per week.
    • If Animal Services, must be able to work weekends.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
