City of Denton is Hiring a Camp Counselor - Teen Camp Near Denton, TX

This requisition expires on June 14, 2024, but may close earlier if the position is filled to the expiration date.
Responsible for assisting with the supervision and coordination of structured activities for day camp, including but not limited to, sports, arts and crafts, nature/outdoor, and other general activities for school-age children.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DUTIES
  • Assist camp supervisor with planning, organizing, and implementing various recreational activities for children and teens.
  • Lead, supervise, and conduct classes, activities, and special events.
  • Supervise children and respond immediately, in case of emergency, including administering first aid as necessary.
  • Follow appropriate training and ensure an atmosphere where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning and recreational experiences.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment for children including but not limited to, equipment and materials; ensure appropriate items are accessible, appropriate and in good condition for child use.
  • Assist in the enforcement of department, site, and program rules and/or regulations, and safety precautions.
  • Administer medication and maintain medical records and logs.
  • Safely drive a 15-passenger van and transport children to various locations daily.
  • Assist with the maintenance of all child records, including but not limited to, attendance, discipline, and injury; communicate appropriate information with parents/guardians, as directed.

  • Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult CPR, AED & First Aid Certification designated timeframe outlined for program (online training is not valid),

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws parks and recreation, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of CPR/AED first aid procedures.
  • Knowledge of childhood development that supports recreational activities that are organized, age appropriate and maintain interest.

  • Skill at the beginner level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.

  • Skill in leading and instructing activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, games, and creative dramatics.
  • Skill leading and teaching day camp or after-schoolactivities, sports, nature, and/or arts and crafts.

  • Ability to motivate children and provide appropriate guidance and behavior management.
  • Ability to take charge and identify solutions quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple work tasks while balancing competing priorities with attention to detail and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must attend and successfully complete the City’s Defensive Driving Course (DDC) and Van training as soon as possible after employment, if required to drive City vehicle or personal vehicle for City business.
  • Must have or obtain Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult CPR, AED & First Aid Certification designated timeframe outlined for program (online training is not valid).
  • If for Preschool Director position, must meet the Texas Department of Family and Protective Service (TXDFPS) Minimum Standards of Care for Child-Care Centers within 12 months of employment.
  • If for Preschool positions, must be able to pass FBI fingerprinting and background check as required by TXDFPS childcare licensing.
  • If Preschool, must completed required 24-30 hours of DFPS training.
  • If Preschool to Kindergarten positions, must be able to swim and be prepared to swim in emergencies
SAFETY
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor. 
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): Yes.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; art supplies, outdoor gear, recreational and sports equipment, including but not limited to, tables, chairs, coolers, games, and inflatables. Fifteen- (15) passenger van.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent reaching, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand and leg motions.
  • Lifting: Heavy lifting no more than 50 pounds; carrying up to 25 pounds.
  • Environment: Works inside and outside with exposure to inclement weather, noise, debris, odor, and chemicals; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
    • Must be able to work overtime or outside of normal business hours, as required.
    • Must be available for position trainings during the designated timeframe outlined for program.
    • Must be able to obtain Adult and Pediatric CPR, AED and First Aid certification by the designated timeframe outlined for program.
    • Must be able to obtain City of Denton Van Driving Certificate by the designated timeframe outlined for program.
    • Must be able to complete the City of Denton Cash Handling Training by the designated timeframe outlined for program.
    • Must be able to complete the Rockwall Safety Training Course by the designated timeframe.
    • Must be able to work the designated summer seasonal program schedule, dates will adjust annually, Monday - Friday with shift times varying between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.
    • Must work the Citywide special event, date will adjust annually.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions. Must be able to drive a 15-passenger van with children in attendance.
