The City of Delray Beach is a Non-Tobacco Workplace. The definition of "tobacco or nicotine products" includes but is not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipes, snuff, e-cigarettes and nicotine patches or gum.This is technical work in conducting electrical plan review and inspections involving all types of buildings and structures of new and existing construction and special applications. Work is performed under general supervision.
 
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Review all plans and drawings for electrical code compliance.
  • Visit job sites to make electrical inspections.
  • Record and document all electrical inspection activities.
  • Provide information and assistance to electrical contractors and others.
  • Keep superior apprised of all electrical inspection and plan review activities.
  • Attend various meetings.
  • Deal with the public with regards to electrical work and information.
  • Investigate all electric complaints and finds solution.
  • Assist and instruct fellow inspectors in the understanding of the electrical code.
  • Keep abreast of the latest information available involving the electrical construction and manufacturing industry.
  • Act as a member of Damage Assessment Team before and after a natural disaster, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, etc.
  • Act as a call-out on an incident requiring an electrical inspector.
  • Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Five (5) years experience in the electrical trade as a supervisor, inspector, engineer, electrician or contractor.
  • Must possess a certification by the Florida Department of Professional Regulations, Building Code Administrator's and Inspectors as a commercial and residential plan reviewer and electrical inspector or be able to attain them within one year of hire. 
  • A valid Florida Driver's License and clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of electrical equipment and appliances in the building trade.
  • Requires demonstrated ability to utilize personal computer and office software such as MS Word, MS Excel and electronic mail. 
Knowledge of electrical testing devices. Knowledge of regulations governing electrical codes. Ability to read and interpret electrical plans and specifications for all types of installations. Ability to enforce electrical codes. Skill in enforcing electrical codes with tact and firmness. Skill in locating defects and hazards in electrical installations. Ability to learn the City ordinances and land development regulations. Ability to apply the mathematical principles associated with the National Electric Code to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to presented electrical plans. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, subordinates, employees, other departments and agencies. Projects a professional impression when dealing with the general public. Ability to manage and prioritize routine, specialized and complex assignments and problems utilizing knowledge acquired through prior education, training, and experience. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment.

A comparable combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

The employee is occasionally required to walk, balance, crawl, bend, stoop, smell, kneel and drive. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Work inside and outside in various weather conditions with noise, electrical energy, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces, poor lighting. Works at heights (up to 80 feet). Works below ground level and in stressful situations
